POSITION SUMMARY:

The Clinical Supervisor will oversee and supervise Master Level clinicians who are responsible for evaluating, treating, and providing support services for patients in need of psychiatric services. The clinicians are co-located in medical ambulatory settings, including primary and specialty care clinics.

The Clinical Supervisor will supervise staff across locations. Responsibilities include: overseeing daily clinical activities, providing weekly supervision to non-independently licensed clinicians, utilizing data to improve service utilization and patient access, and providing clinical back-up and support to the teams as needed. The Clinical Supervisor is accountable for supervising, performance management under the guidance of the IBH Clinical Director, and schedule management for clinical staff.

The Clinical Supervisor will utilize evidence-based clinical techniques and theory, to consult on, assess, and intervene with high-risk patients and their families regarding the impact/amelioration of emotion and social problems. In addition, the Clinical Supervisor also provides direct clinical care embedded in a medical ambulatory setting through individual, couples, family, and group therapy sessions. Candidates should have previous supervisory experience, and experience in Integrated Behavioral Health, stepped care, or co-located behavioral health models is strongly preferred.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Clinical Supervision

  • Supervises staff including training, delegating tasks, overseeing daily activities, mentoring, guiding through demonstration of best practices, and offering opportunities for professional development
  • Coordinates and maintains the daily schedule for coverage across clinical areas and reviews with Clinical Director as needed
  • Ensures appropriate clinical supervision for staff by clinical licensure
  • Manages clinical training placements in clinical areas, including ensuring appropriate clinical supervision
  • Ensures appropriate standards of care for patients in crisis and assists clinical team in response to crisis situations
  • Maintains competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality care
  • Maintains a complete understanding of emergency procedures

Administrative Management

  • Manages team calendar of absences and plan for/ensure sufficient clinical coverage.
  • Assists with performance management issues with the Clinical Director as needed
  • Assists with quality improvement initiatives to improve the delivery of high quality, patient-centered, accessible clinical care, as appropriate, including the oversight and management of clinical groups
  • Collaborates with Psychiatry and medical department clinical and administrative leadership regarding onboarding of new IBH Clinicians, standards for professional practice, patient care, and innovative programs designed to facilitate high quality patient care, and strategic efforts to improve patient access to BMC’s medical, psychiatric, and social services
  • Submits department statistics and other records and reports within required time frames
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and in-service education program offerings with punctuality and consistency

Direct Patient Care

  • Provides evidence-based psychotherapeutic treatment and/or psychosocial support to patient and family to reduce the impact of identified problems.
  • Assesses patient and family to ascertain those emotional and social problems. Utilizes the department’s psychosocial assessment tool as a guideline.
  • Identifies issues that must be addressed during the patient’s care, and formulates plan.
  • Reports any and all suspected cases of abuse and neglect and follows up to ensure patient receives timely comprehensive consultations and compliance with legal mandates.
  • Identifies need to involve patient’s family through the initial assessment process and attempts contact on same day, if indicated.
  • Consults and collaborates with healthcare team members to insure that patient’s emotional and social needs are addressed.
  • Ensures that patient and family remain apprised, involved, supported and treated through prescribed clinical relationship through at least weekly contacts and whenever a change in care or plan requires more contact.
  • Utilizes evidenced based Clinical Social Work technique and theory to assist patient and family in coping with illness or social problem to achieve improved functioning and emotional state.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality according to hospital policy. Practices professional discretion when determining the inclusion of any patient information into medical record or department clinical record notes.
  • Notes in medical record the exclusion of critical patient information and its availability.
  • Documents each patient encounter in the medical record or the Department clinical record concurrently according to Department policies. Specifically, documents ongoing treatment work in the Department clinic records. Each recording shall include date, time, title and signature.

Other Duties

  • Complies with departmental, regulatory, and professional requirements for documentation and data collection
  • Onsite expectation a minimum of 4 days a week
  • Performs other duties as needed

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree in Social Work or equivalent such as Mental Health Counseling.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Requires a current Massachusetts Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers or equivalent (Massachusetts Licensed Mental Health Counselor).

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum two years of full-time work experience as a licensed Social Worker or as a licensed clinician.  Experience providing behavioral health care in medical setting preferred.  Previous supervisory experience required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to mentor, guide, and motivate direct reports through demonstration of best practices and leading by example
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals, develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and supervise and manage team
  • Demonstrated broad theoretical knowledge and excellent clinical skills that include models of case management and psychosocial service
  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).  Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret data and use data to guide decision-making
  • Proficient with basic computer programs, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), web browsers, and electronic medical records systems
