POSITION SUMMARY:

The Clinical Research Data Analyst’s principal roles are to: 1) Work with and alongside clinical researchers at all levels within the clinical research community at Boston Medical Center and Boston University Medical Campus to create research quality data sets and reports using the resources of Boston Medical Center’s Research Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW); and 2) Assist in optimization efforts to improve data quality, science and standardization processes within the Research CDW.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Clinical Research Data Analyst’s primary responsibilities are to (1) retrieve and manage data from the CDW using SQL code and (2) create research-quality datasets for retrospective or prospective research studies across the Health System, presenting the data in a usable format for research teams. Provides in-house content expertise in retrieving and managing data using SQL code; informatics; and statistical/epidemiological analysis. Requires strong knowledge of SQL and strict adherence to research and regulatory data policies to ensure secure transmission/retrieval of data.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Programmatically operationalize research data requests from researcher into SQL queries in the Research CDW.

  • Guide researchers through the process of forming a sound, specific data request through consultation, education, and standardization. Help researchers understand the data available, work with them to understand their data requirements, and meet their data needs.

  • Harmonize data from the different sources from which the Research CDW obtains its data and create research-quality datasets ensuring ease-of-use for end-user researcher teams to whom data are delivered.

  • Provide formal written documentation of the dataset construction process, including inclusion and exclusion criteria and key definitions of data elements. Participate in the improvement process.

  • Understand and manage IRB restrictions and other relevant research regulations on data access. Implement the procedures and policies in the data warehouse system for access control.

  • Track hours and work with administrative personnel to accurately invoice end users for services provided.

  • Work with the Director of Research Informatics to build additional research data infrastructure, developing innovative strategies to leverage Research CDW data and serve the research goals of the broader institution.

  • Work with leadership to improve administrative and scientific processes of the Research CDW, ensuring innovation to advance initiatives central to BMC’s mission. Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure efficiency, reliability, and accuracy of CDW data.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, to ensure that exceptional customer service and patient care may be provided.

  • Utilizes hospital’s behavioral standards and RESPECT attributes as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.

  • Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Masters’ degree in applied biostatistics, applied math, computer science, computer/electrical engineering, public health, systems improvement, or information science.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a position focused on the delivery of numerical data to a wide variety of customers, with at least 2 years of experience working in hospital quality, healthcare information management, healthcare analytics, clinical research, or another relevant healthcare field.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated ability to use SQL.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully complete IT projects.

  • Ability to organize, synthesize and analyze large amounts of information.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interface with staff at all levels. Strong creative, analytic and critical thinking ability.

  • Experience managing implementations in a dynamic and highly integrated organization.

  • Knowledge of EPIC Clarity & Caboodle is a plus. Ability to use SAS, R, Tableau, or similar data visualization tools is a plus.
