Reporting to, and working closely with, the Executive Director of Compensation, the Principal Compensation Consultant plays a crucial role on the Compensation team in the design and implementation of compensation plans. This senior-level position's primary objective is continually enhancing our compensation programs, managing job architecture and leveling, ensuring market competitiveness, and developing, interpreting, and overseeing compensation initiatives that align with the Boston Medical Center Health System's philosophy and strategic goals. Drawing on a strong background in labor relations and the administration of hospital-based compensation programs (including Physician Compensation), the Principal Compensation Consultant will provide high-level support for assigned functions, represent Compensation on cross-functional initiatives and projects, and ensure compliance in all activities with both internal and external policies and regulations. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

1. Deliver comprehensive compensation consulting services to various business units across the organization. 

2. Provide guidance on pay decisions, interpret policies and guidelines, and conduct job evaluations, including developing creative solutions for specific compensation-related programs. 

3. Develop complex restructuring plans, job architecture, and leveling to ensure market competitiveness and forecasting models. 

4. Create and deliver concise summaries, costing models, and presentations for all staff levels, including senior executives. 

5. Lead the design and development of new compensation structures and programs while also maintaining and updating existing pay programs. 

6. Independently lead and/or provide high-level support for hospital or system-wide projects. 

7. Represent Compensation on cross-functional projects and initiatives, with a focus on labor relations

8. Administer (or partner with the Executive Director in the administration of) Physician Compensation programs

9. Ensure compliance throughout the system, including FLSA, Joint Commission, EEO-1, AAP Reporting, and OFCCP audits. 

10. Conduct ongoing research to understand industry and organization-specific issues, keeping current with best practices in compensation and HR to improve service delivery. 

11. Other duties as required

 Job Requirements

EDUCATION:

BA/BS degree required, preferably in Human Resources, Finance, or a related discipline.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

None required. CCP – Preferred

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience in compensation required, at least 5 of which must be in the healthcare industry and/or a hospital environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):

  • Strong understanding of Physician Compensation and labor relations/contract negotiations in a hospital environment required.
  • Critical thinker successful in developing innovative solutions to complex issues.
  • Effective communication skills regarding compensation plans, including the ability to train on matters related to area of expertise and present information in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Ability to manage complex relationships in a positive and consultative manner.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and technical compensation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
