We are seeking a full-time Trainer to deliver in-person and virtual trainings on prevention and early intervention approaches to substance use, and to support organizational implementation of Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) and Motivational Interviewing practices through consultation and technical assistance. The Trainer will work collaboratively with the team to develop and deliver high-quality trainings using multiple training modalities with a diverse audience of individuals and organizations across the state. The ideal candidate has an engaging training presence and experience working to implement various approaches that address the continuum of substance use within organizations. This individual will help inform the development of training curriculum, as well as resources and tools to support skill acquisition of training participants, and will identify opportunities for continuous quality improvement. In addition, well-qualified candidates will have experience with organizational implementation efforts through facilitation of organizational change. The Trainer will report to the program Training Manager and adhere to guidelines set.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Massachusetts Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment Training & Technical Assistance (MASBIRT TTA) is a statewide contract funded by the Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. Our mission is to assist organizations in Massachusetts to implement prevention and early intervention approaches to substance use including Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) and Motivational Interviewing.

We work with a variety of healthcare, human service, public health, and other organizations who share our desire to transform conversations about substance use to recognize the dignity of people served, and to encourage practices that promote health, wellbeing, equity and inclusion. This position will support the development/delivery of various trainings and organizational implementation efforts through a broad range of training, technical assistance, and consultation services.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Training and Technical Assistance Activities:

Training Content Development:

  • Gain proficiency in MASBIRT TTA core training and technical assistance offerings and processes. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of all content. Modify approaches based on funder priorities.
  • Maintain an up-to-date comprehensive knowledge of substance use, SBIRT and Motivational Interviewing approaches.
  • Identify opportunities for training curriculum development and improvement, including new content areas, resources and tools to support skill acquisition for training participants for both synchronous and asynchronous trainings and enduring materials (e.g., online modules, online resources, webinars).
  • Develop enhanced content and new content in line with educational theory, adult learning theory/applications, and instructional technology capacity. Develop tools and training support materials that meet the needs of training participants.
  • Assist with the development of training-of-trainer materials. Engage in ongoing learning and implementation of live training and instructional technology approaches and programming.

Training Delivery:

  • Follow training curriculum as directed by the MASBIRT TTA team. Collaborate with team and training site coordinator to schedule training and technical assistance activities. Ensure clear communication to minimize logistic concerns and maximize learning for training participants.
  • Deliver high-quality in-person and virtual live trainings using adult learning principles focused on knowledge and skill acquisition. Complete all reporting requirements including, but not limited to, training process management.
  • Deliver classroom exercises and proficiency exams as developed by the MASBIRT TTA team. Document classroom attendance, collect required documentation including accreditation information, attendance lists, etc.
  • Conduct follow up contacts to determine uptake of SBIRT/MI skills and services and determine any additional training needs. Support evaluation processes for all designated training participants.
  • Maintain the ability to work variable shifts, on occasion, to meet training needs. Maintain a valid driver’s license and vehicle to travel to trainings across Massachusetts.

Organizational Implementation and Change:

  • Engage in team-based work to partner with external organizations to guide projects related to SBIRT/MI implementation including workflow process redesign, best practice analysis, policy/procedure creation, and other operations-focused initiatives. 
  • Work collaboratively with team members to develop organizational change planning and develop service delivery approaches. Maintain flexible approach in an evolving environment to test new methods and critically review successes and challenges.  
  • Prioritize multiple concurrent projects and to work effectively with diverse teams by developing effective relationships with project leaders throughout the project process and by supporting ongoing collaboration.  
  • Identify and maintain contact with SBIRT champions at training sites to help inform implementation models and sample workflows.
  • Engage in outreach to organizations to determine needs for future trainings and to market services.

Program Support:

  • Provide prompt and accurate reports as required by and as requested. Engage in process tracking to ensure up to date and accurate records of MASBIRT TTA activities.
  • Provide feedback on training participant knowledge and skills to the MASBIRT TTA team.
  • Maintain regular communication with the MASBIRT TTA team specifically focused on successes, challenges, areas for improvement, and areas for expansion in training offerings and organizational implementation.
  • Contribute feedback on materials developed by the group with the goal of providing a high quality training and technical assistance services.
  • Work with MASBIRT TTA team to identify and resolve workflow or implementation issues, order supplies and equipment, maintain equipment necessary for all training and technical assistance activities, and maintain an adequate inventory and timely delivery.

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree in education, public health, human services or related field preferred.
  • Commensurate relevant experience considered in lieu of formal education.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have 2-3 years of experience in training development, delivery and facilitation, and public speaking, both virtually and in-person.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the principles and techniques of training and motivation.
  • Clinical or non-clinical direct service experience in healthcare, behavioral health, public health, social service or education settings preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills, including communicating by video conference, phone, and/or in person, and ability to adjust style and messaging depending on the audience and medium.
  • Ability to analyze data and other information. Ability to prepare written reports, studies and recommendations.
  • Keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to high-quality products, customer/client service, and team interactions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Proficiency in or capability of learning new software (e.g., Zoom, Box, Adobe, Google Suite, Articulate, etc.).
  • Ability to work virtually when needed with a strong and stable internet connection and quiet workspace.
  • Knowledge of substance use and Motivational Interviewing strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of instructional design technology and QI methodology preferred.
