As a Human Resources Business Partner supporting Impatient and Ambulatory Nursing, you will have an integral role in supporting our frontline staff in their important role of patient care. This role will provide employee relations support in a unionized environment, but also broad based professional HR support and other duties as assigned to support the overall business at Boston Medical Center. You will partner with our Centers of Excellence teams to implement practices, policies and procedures in order to be responsive to the Hospital’s goals, culture and competitive practices. All HR staff members must be focused on the points of integration for seamless patient care, employee effectiveness and experience.

The Senior Human Resources Business Partner, Nursing, serves as a strategic and trusted advisor to Boston Medical Center’s Inpatient and Ambulatory nursing leadership, supporting one of the organization’s largest mission‑critical teams. This role provides expert guidance in employee relations, labor matters, organizational effectiveness, and leader coaching within a complex, fast‑paced, and unionized clinical environment. With a strong partnership-driven approach, the Senior HRBP helps foster a positive, equitable, and engaged workplace for Nursing staff, advancing BMC’s mission to deliver exceptional care, without exception.

About the Role

The Senior Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP), Nursing is a strategic and highly visible HR leader supporting BMC’s inpatient nursing teams. In this role, you will partner closely with nurse leaders and frontline caregivers to create a positive, consistent, and equitable employee experience, helping to advance our mission of providing exceptional care to every patient, every day.

You will serve as a trusted advisor to nursing leadership, providing expertise in employee relations, workforce planning, leader development, and change management. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy, visibility, and impact. You will help drive culture, support leader capability, and influence operational excellence across one of the hospital’s largest and most critical workforce segments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic HR advisor to Inpatient and Ambulatory nursing leadership, providing thought partnership, coaching, and guidance on people‑related decisions.

  • Build collaborative, trust‑based relationships with nurse managers, directors, and frontline staff.

  • Provide expert support on employee relations for both represented and non‑represented employees; collaborate closely with Labor Relations on union matters.

  • Interpret and apply collective bargaining agreements while promoting a culture of consistency, fairness, and respect.

  • Lead or contribute to initiatives in workforce planning, talent development, retention, engagement, and organizational effectiveness.

  • Partner with HR Centers of Excellence (Talent Acquisition, Compensation, Benefits, OD&E, and HR Operations) to deliver seamless HR service.

  • Support leaders through organizational changes, ensuring strong communication, alignment, and employee support.

  • Use data to assess trends, anticipate workforce needs, and propose actionable solutions.

  • Maintain a strong, consistent presence on units to build relationships and foster a positive, engaged nursing environment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, in related field preferred
  • Master’s Degree in HR, Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR Generalist or HR Business Partner experience.
  • Prior experience supporting nursing or clinical operations preferred.
  • Experience in a unionized environment, including employee relations and contract interpretation, preferred.
  • Healthcare experience highly desirable.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all levels, especially in a dynamic clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated success resolving complex employee relations and labor‑related issues.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, use sound judgment, and provide balanced, practical solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; comfortable working with data to drive decisions.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and objective in high‑stakes or contentious situations.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • High degree of integrity, discretion, and emotional intelligence.

Compensation Range:

$89,500.00- $130,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
