Position: Registered Respiratory Therapist-ECMO Specialist

Department: Respiratory Therapy

Schedule: Full Time, 36 Hours, Days (7a - 7p)

The registered respiratory therapist-ECMO specialist (RRT-ES) provides respiratory care services in accordance with department policies. Administers, monitors, controls and evaluates complex life support systems that ventilate acute or chronically ill patients. An RRT-ES is the technical specialist educated and trained to manage the ECMO system including blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenator, and related equipment. The ECMO Specialist, under qualified medical direction and supervision, is also educated to be responsible for the clinical needs of the patient on ECMO which can include: (1) maintenance of normal acid-base balance, oxygenation, and ventilation, (2) administration of blood and blood by-products, (3) medication delivery, and (4) maintenance of appropriate anticoagulation. Participates in hospital initiatives and projects.

The position of ECMO Specialist exists to support and train staff on ECMO procedures and devices and to ensure all of the equipment associated with the ECMO is properly maintained. The ECMO Specialist demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to support patients, physicians, respiratory therapists and nursing staff to ensure the effective utilization of ECMO services. The ECMO Specialist works independently and collaboratively, while exercising judgment and initiative to be sure that all ECMO patient’s needs related to the equipment are met.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CREDENTIAL/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Must successfully complete an ELSO approved or BMC approved ECMO Specialist course within 3, 6 months of start date
  • Current certification as an ECMO Specialist preferred, required to attend the next available BMC ECMO Specialist course, currently scheduled for xxxxxxxx
  • Remove active member of American Association of Respiratory Care preferred.

Licensure/Credentials/Certifications:

  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Current certification as an ECMO specialist.
  • Active member of American Association of Respiratory Care
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred, not required

EXPERIENCE:

Requires a minimum of two years as a Respiratory Therapist.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pulmonary Physics, pulmonary Pathophysiology, Advanced Respiratory Care, Mathematics, Blood Gas Chemistry, and Pharmacology at a level generally acquired through completion of a two year AMA approved program in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and communicate in English language.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and effectively work in a team environment, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Requires a caring and sympathetic attitude and ability to explain therapy and goals to patients and family members and to communicate effectively with other health care professionals.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to enter and access data/information.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.
  • Must have the physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting and demands for the patient populations regularly served.

Compensation Range:

$44.43- $59.80

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
