POSITION SUMMARY:

The Orthopedic Tech performs both administrative and patient care support for orthopedic patients. In the patient care area, the orthopedic tech assists with duties such as applying and removing casts, splints and braces, instructing patients with the use of crutches and tractions, under the direction and supervision of Operations Manager and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice. In the administrative area the orthopedic tech gathers patient information for registration, schedules appointments, verifies demographic information and assists in the facilitation of patient access to services.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Minimum of High School education/GED required.

Work also requires successful completion of either:

* an Orthopedic Technology program or

* a Medical Assistant program or

* military technical medic training or

* at least one full year coursework in allied health (which includes A&P) or

* at least one year on-the-job training in orthopedic related work.

EXPERIENCE:

In addition to above training requirement, this position requires at least two years of previous work experience.

Experience with cast and traction set up is preferred.
Must pass clinical competency testing.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to effectively speak, read, and write English.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate in a courteous, pleasant and professional manner with patients, general public, staff members, outside agencies, and all other internal and external contacts.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Ability to work independently and to make decisions based on department polices and established procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
  • Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.
  • Hand dexterity, hearing and visual acuity to respond to a patient or take direction from a provider; apply and remove casts and other orthopedic devices, adjust equipment, observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
