Position: Operations Manager, Central Sterile Processing

Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours, Days/Eves
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Central Sterile Processing Operations Manager maintains 24-hour responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating all clinical and personnel management activities of the Central Sterile Processing Department (CSPD). The manager is responsible for providing leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental philosophy and goals. The Manager works with area supervisors, liaisons, and team members to facilitate availability of surgical and procedural instrumentation along with other reusable equipment to support clinical areas in the BMC network.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Human Resource Management: Accountable for the coordination and evaluation of unit personnel in accordance with hospital and personnel policies.
1.1 Functions as positive role model for staff by adhering to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
1.2 Interviews, hires, disciplines, and terminates employees.
1.3 In partnership with the educator supports the onboarding and training of new employees. Reviews the completed checklist with employee, educator and preceptor to ensure the employee is competent prior to independent practice.
1.4 Completes ongoing evaluation during the probationary period. Discusses strengths and weaknesses with employee. Confers with Human Resources in instances when probationary period may need extension.
1.5 Maintains any records of discussions held during counseling sessions. Documents any warnings given, whether oral or written. Forwards documentation to Labor Relations and/or Human Resources.
1.6 Demonstrates creativity in problem solving. Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation to follow through on all responsibilities in a timely manner.
1.7 Utilize available resources. Partners with supervisors and clinical educators to, assess, plan, develop and implement programs designed to enhance the professional development of the staff.
1.8 Routinely evaluates and reviews supervisor and liaison performance and discusses and documents individual performance annually; supports direct reports in the same process for their reporting team members. Discusses and establishes improvements and/or goals for the coming year.
1.9 Executes established payroll procedures, including time and payroll adjustments utilizing union contract principles and Kronos timekeeping system. Resolves employee payroll issues.
1.10 Utilizes effective communication and is, available and accessible and accessible to staff to ensure efficient and effective operations of the department. Assists in the development of subordinates through training and delegation.
1.11 Promotes the growth and development of supervisors’ leadership skills through delegation of specific tasks and projects.
1.12 Accountable for unit staffing levels, staff schedules, and utilization of Kronos and union principles to ensure efficient CSPD throughput
1.13 Upholds all elements of workforce needs pursuant to current Union Contract.
1.14 Supports the unit leadership coverage plan.
Central Processing Flow Management: Accountable for the coordination and evaluation of the practices for the Central Sterile Processing in accordance with the Boston Medical Center Policies/Procedures, AAMI, JCAHO and AORN recommendations and standards.
2.1 Assesses the flow of patient/surgeon case needs for the Boston Medical Center Central Processing Department to meet the daily patient/surgeon case needs. Also assess the flow and meets the needs of the satellite reprocessing locations.
2.2 Holds staff accountable for the implementation of standards to comply with regulatory agency requirements, policies/procedures.
2.3 On an ongoing basis, monitors and evaluates the department performance standards, recommends interventions and process improvement opporutunities, and on approval implements workflow changes.
2.4 Is a subject matter expert in Infection Control, sterilization standards and standards of practice for decontamination, reprocessing and sterilization functions.
2.5 Maintains effective communication method for disseminating information ng( new policies and procedures etc) to the leadership team and employees
2.6 Establishes and maintains effective lines of communication with other disciplines, ancillary personnel and physicians.
2.7 Complies with all required QA/QC processes for Boston Medical Center-assigned areas of responsibility and presents to committees as requested.
2.8 Complies with JCAHO, AAMI, AORN, CDC, OSHA agency recommendations and standards for practice.
2.9 Supervision of CSPD inventory including instrumentation and physical plant, along with processes for repair, reordering, organization, and storage.
3.0 Reinforces and maintains the loaner kit process through supervisors and shift leaders; accountable for the management of vendor expectations and deviations from policy and professional conduct.
Fiscal Responsibility: Accountable for coordinating and justifying the daily operational supply needs and bi-weekly labor reports.
3.1 Monitors unit supply and labor budget. Is accountable for personnel, and supply expenditures.
3.2 Investigates and justifies budget variances within established deadlines.
3.3 Develops staff knowledge in aspects of fiscal management to assist with the efficient use of supplies and equipment.
3.4 Assists the Director with the review of required contracts (service, purchases, subscriptions, programming and preventative maintenance) as needed.
Safety Goals Responsibility: Assures a safe and healthy work environment for employees. Responsible for ensuring the maintenance of department specific safety standards including the completion of both the hospital-wide and department specific safety training.
4.1 Updates department specific safety policies based on Joint Commission standards and any other regulatory agency standards.
4.2 Oversees a process that assures all equipment operational procedures are written and employees have signed off that they have been trained properly on the use of such tools and equipment. Assures all annual training of employees is completed, documented and filed.
4.3 Participates in the development and/or implementation of safety education for all department employees.
4.4 Ensures that all department employees are compliant with mandatory education programs on equipment, emergency evacuation, and other department specific training.

4.6 Completes/reviews employee incident reports and risk reports within established timeframes (generally within 24 hours of a tasked RL or immediate filing with an employee safety event); proposes any necessary adjustments in the department and implements them upon Director approval.
Compliance
5.1 End accountability for compliance for the Central Sterile Processing Department and satellite processing areas (Endoscopy/Otolaryngolog) including equipment storage, processing equipment, IFU guidelines, and CSPD staff education.
5.2 Responsible to ensure CSPD staff adhere to established departmental standards of practice, infection control, AAMI, and Joint Commission standards, as well as all BMC policies and procedures.
Stakeholder Operations Responsibility: Promotes the achievement of Surgical Division goals and objectives.
6.1 Participates in committees, as requested and attends departmental meetings
6.2 Recommends, interprets and supports administrative policies and procedures.
6.3 Responds rapidly in emergency situations, and effectively utilizes accepted management principles, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
6.4 Promotes harmonious relationships and positive interactions among members of the healthcare team.
6.5 Participates in and contributes to uniform quality assessment and improvement programs, established for the division.
6.6 Assists with developing department specific policies and procedures.
6.7 Supports the advancement of HSPA and CBSPD within the department, hospital and community by promoting staff involvement in professional activities.
5.8 Routinely interfaces and meets with nursing and operational leadership for support services.
5.9 Meets with members of medical staff, including surgeons, for quality improvement projects, service recovery, and constructive feedback opportunities; both in real time for the OR and on a scheduled cadence.
6.0 Routinely works with Service Line Coordinators on elements of surgical flow, case cart construction, instrumentation needs, new product review, and loaner tray requirements; may particpate on monthly faculty meeting with SLC team or managers.
Professional Development responsibility: Accountable for ongoing self-development in management and clinical skills. Responsible for maintaining current industry standards and standards of practice.
7.1 Promotes professional and unit goals and objectives and implements a plan to achieve these goals.
7.2 Attends required in-service educational programs.
7.3 Maintains service-specific certification as requires (i.e., CRCST).
7.4 Participates in annual evaluation, identifying areas of accomplishment and areas requiring further development.
Customer Service: Develops, promotes and maintains a department specific customer service responsiveness philosophy.
8.1 Maintains good customer relations to ensure that customer requirements are met by the Central Sterile Processing Department.
8.2 Works in conjunction with the Operating Room and Satellite areas (ENDO and OTO) leadership to discuss OR/CSPD processes and improvement initiatives.
8.3 Ensures that every effort is made to resolve customer complaints immediately or with 24 hours.
8.4 Educates staff on customer requirements and ensures training on customer relations.
Other Duties:
9.1 Utilizes hospital’s cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
9.2 Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
9.3 Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Associates Degree or higher preferred. High School Diploma/GED required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Must have or obtain within 90 days of hire a certification as a Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) by the International Association for Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), or, as a Central Sterile Professional Department Technician (CSPDT) by Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). RN and ADN licensure are accepted in lieu of the above certifcation.
Certification as a Certified in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) supervisor/ manager is a plus; CHL certification is required withn 24 months of hire. Certifications need to be maintained by obtaining the required CEU’s each year through the certifying agency.
EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 5 years of current experience working in a Central Sterile Processing Sterilization or Operating Room environment or a combination of the two.
Previous Supervisor experience in Sterile Processing required.
Previous Experience at a Level 1 Adult Trauma Hospital Preferred
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Thorough knowledge of decontamination and sterilization and high level disinfection techniques and procedures, infection control and work flow principles and requirements, and equipment and supply inventory protocols.
Complete knowledge of clinical operations, hospital mission and goals and human resources policies and procedures.
Advanced English oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills, including ability to multi-task, delegate appropriately and meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to provide direction and development to employees by coaching, identifying training needs, assigning progressively challenging projects, and assisting in career development planning.

Develops personal knowledge of unit-specific technology platforms (Cencitrac, Kronos, One Source, Torq).
Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to enter and access data/information. Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook and web browsers.
Compensation Range:
$66,000.00- $96,000.00This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
