The Nurse Ambulatory Manager is responsible for the administrative, clinical, and operational oversight of assigned ambulatory within the OBGYN practice areas. This role provides leadership and direction to nursing and clinical support staff to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care in alignment with Boston Medical Center’s mission and values.

The manager promotes a culture of safety, equity, service excellence, and continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and institutional policies.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

               

Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

Ensures the delivery of safe, evidence-based nursing care within the ambulatory practice environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Promotes a culture of patient safety and high reliability within the clinical team.

  • Ensures compliance with nursing standards of practice, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.

  • Monitors quality indicators, safety events, and patient outcomes to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Leads quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and clinical reliability.

  • Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care delivery.

Patient Experience and Service Excellence

Promotes a patient-centered culture that prioritizes respectful, compassionate, and equitable care. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensures staff deliver care aligned with BMC service standards and patient experience expectations.

  • Promotes effective communication practices with patients and families.

  • Addresses patient concerns and service recovery issues in a timely and professional manner.

  • Ensures culturally responsive care for the diverse populations served by Boston Medical Center.

Leadership and Workforce Management

Provides direct leadership and supervision of nursing and clinical support staff within the ambulatory practice. Responsibilities include:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, and retains high-performing clinical staff.

  • Conducts performance evaluations, coaching, and professional development activities.

  • Addresses performance concerns through progressive discipline in accordance with BMC policies.

  • Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet operational needs and patient demand.

  • Promotes a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.

  • Facilitates daily clinical huddles and team communication to support safe and efficient clinic operations.

Ambulatory Operations Management

Ensures efficient daily clinic operations and workflow optimization. Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees clinic readiness including staffing, equipment, supplies, and exam room availability.

  • Monitors clinic throughput, patient flow, and scheduling efficiency.

  • Collaborates with operations leadership to improve access and clinic performance.

  • Identifies workflow inefficiencies and implements process improvements.

  • Supports implementation of new clinical initiatives, programs, and operational changes.

Financial and Resource Stewardship

Supports responsible management of departmental financial resources. Responsibilities include:

  • Assists in managing labor resources, staffing productivity, and scheduling efficiency.

  • Monitors operational expenses and resource utilization.

  • Participates in budget planning and variance management as requested.

  • Identifies opportunities for operational efficiencies while maintaining high standards of patient care.

Regulatory Compliance and Survey Readiness

Ensures continuous readiness for regulatory and accreditation requirements. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintains compliance with standards from regulatory agencies including The Joint Commission and Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

  • Ensures staff adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.

  • Supports infection prevention, patient safety, and environmental safety initiatives.

  • Maintains documentation and competency standards required for regulatory compliance.

Communication and Collaboration

Promotes effective communication and collaboration across departments. Responsibilities include:

  • Partners with physician leadership and practice administrators to support clinic operations.

  • Communicates effectively with nursing leadership and hospital administration.

  • Participates in committees, performance improvement initiatives, and institutional programs.

  • Serves as a liaison between nursing staff and leadership.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises clinical staff including:

  • Registered Nurses

  • Licensed Practical Nurses (if applicable)

  • Clinical support staff (if applicable)

  • The RN Ambulatory Manager is responsible for staff performance management, scheduling oversight, and workforce development.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or related field.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Massachusetts.

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Massachusetts, in good standing.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (or equivalent) required upon hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred

  • Certification in Ambulatory Care Nursing (RN-BC) certification preferred.          

  • Certification in Nurse Executive (NE-BC/NEA-BC), or other relevant nursing leadership certification within 1 year of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

Required

  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical nursing experience.

  • Minimum of one year in a leadership role.

  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory experience.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated experience using process improvement methodologies to evaluate workflows, improve operational performance, and enhance patient care outcomes. Experience with structured improvement frameworks such as Lean, PDSA, or similar methodologies preferred.

  • Experience with quality improvement, regulatory readiness, and healthcare operations.

  • Ability to interpret and utilize healthcare analytics and operational data to inform decision-making, monitor clinical performance metrics, and drive quality improvement initiatives.

Preferred

  • Prior ambulatory nursing leadership experience.

  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams in an ambulatory clinical setting.

  • Technical proficiency with healthcare information systems and data tools, including electronic health records, reporting platforms, and clinical documentation systems used to support ambulatory care operations.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and systems-thinking skills with the ability to translate operational and clinical data into actionable improvement strategies.

  • Multilingual skills reflecting the patient population served by Boston Medical Center.

Compensation Range:

$97,500.00- $141,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
