POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the MRI/CT Supervisor and the Director of Radiology, the Lead Technologist leads, plans and coordinates the daily operations of the MRI department through interactions with support and technical staff, other departments, Radiologists and others as necessary. Primary duty is to coordinate all aspects of the day-to-day operations of assigned area to ensure delivery of quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Assists the MRI/CT Supervisor and the Assistant MRI/CT Supervisor in daily operations relating to the technical workings of the MRI Department and oversees the work of assigned technical staff.
  • Schedules and assigns Technologists as required by the needs of the department. Ensures proper staffing and allocates Technologists and staff other departmental areas as necessary and appropriate for patient care, budget, staffing and department and hospital needs. Oversees employees in all areas for assigned shift.  Ensures that employees are performing duties and following policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Assists in the implementation and ongoing utilization of quality assurance programs with involvement from the MRI/CT Supervisor and /or Assistant MRI/CT Supervisor.  Maintains compliance logs for equipment and QA measures including those required by the ACR and attends compliance rounds when requested.
  • Maintains equipment and physical space through interaction with both the MRI/CT Supervisor and Assistant MRI/CT Supervisor and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital.  Coordinates service calls, internal work orders and other equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Works closely with the MRI/CT Supervisor and Assistant MRI/CT Supervisor to give feedback and improve individual department budgets, patient care and Technologist training and initiatives.
  • Resolves patient scheduling issues by working with appropriate providers and staff.
  • Maintains clinical protocols and assists in making changes when required.  Assists in research protocol development and training and attends investigator meetings and training sessions.  Ensures phantom imaging is performed on each study as required.  
  • Performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure.  Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients.  Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks the appropriate persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study.
  • Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times. Accommodates patient needs and staffing needs through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.
  • Sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper imaging techniques.  Adjusts imaging factors when necessary to improve study or quality factors. Works through radiologist’s requirements to provide appropriate images and provides additional views and variations of techniques as requested.
  • Completes procedures in timely fashion while providing quality images for Radiology and outside departments.  Completes work by the end of the shift or communicates with supervisor about work needing completion.
  • Participate in intravenous (IV) training, and passes all competencies required to start and administer IV contrast material under the general observation of a qualified physician, as per department policy and procedure.  
  • Maintains equipment through interaction with both management and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital.
  • Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved.  Communicates patient complaints professionally to the appropriate supervisor.  Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and/or any inappropriate behavior. Handles telephone calls and requests for services both professionally and appropriately.
  • Provides service and care to patients of all ages.
  • Understands the requirements of the department by providing services to patients not only in performing of studies but also in providing any/all information on reports as necessary and appropriate.
  • Monitors patient‘s conditions and if it is determined assistance may be required, the employee takes action to facilitate the best course of care to include: nurse involvement, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.
  • Ensures that all required documentation is properly completed for billing purposes to include (but not necessarily limited to) electronic orders and paperwork related to all procedures performed.   Understands and adheres to managed care guidelines to ensure proper recording for billing of Radiology procedures.
  • Works hours as regularly scheduled or according to the operational needs of the radiology department.  Satisfies operational requirements to include covering the department as determined necessary through the Supervisor, Operations Manager, or Radiology Director.
  • Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures as required.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and hospital’s goals and mission.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Knowledge of principles and procedures of MRI and the operation and maintenance of equipment generally acquired through the completion of training either in an ARRT approved formal educational program or through fulfillment of the didactic and clinical requirements for advanced registration in MRI as outlined by the ARRT.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Must be ARRT registered in Radiologic Technology. 

MRI Specialty required or obtained within one year of employment.

BLS required. 

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 1-2 years experience in diagnostic radiology, experience in MRI preferred. 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and medical terminology with the analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to enter and access data/information.
  • Working knowledge of Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
  • Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals. 
  • Must present a positive, team oriented attitude and a professional appearance.
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards set forth by the Radiology Department, BMC and other regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to interact with other staff technologists.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff, ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; to set priorities and solve problems; to respond quickly to emergency requests.

Will be responsible for working with research teams building protocols, running phantoms and implementing protocols

Compensation Range:

$51.37- $65.16
