Under the general supervision of the Director of Respiratory Therapy, the Respiratory Care Manager provides operational, clinical, technical, and administrative leadership for respiratory care services across assigned inpatient and/or ambulatory areas. The manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, monitoring operational and quality performance metrics, supporting staff development, and collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality respiratory care services. The position contributes to departmental strategy, operational improvement initiatives, and organizational goals while supporting continuity of patient care across Boston Medical Center care settings.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Director Respiratory Therapy, the Manager Respiratory Therapy provides technical, operational and administrative leadership for the department.  This includes managing all aspects of the day-to-day operations for the BMC campus, working closely with Medical Directors to ensure staff are providing the highest clinical care, interfacing with key stakeholders across the hospital, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and contributing to setting and executing on annual goals and departmental strategy.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

1.0 Manages employees, performs orientation and training, and conducts administrative and clerical tasks in a manner that facilitates effective intra/inter department business.

1.1 Completes time schedules accurately and on-time.

1.2 Performs QA audits to ensure quality of care provided and departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies

1.3 Assists in the planning and development of departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.

1.4 Monitors subordinate performance. Takes corrective action to ensure departmental standards are upheld.

1.5 Performs written evaluation of subordinates.

1.6 Coordinates activities of staff regarding cleaning and sterilizing of equipment to ensure current supply of equipment for patient care use.

1.7 Assist in selecting candidates for employment, as directed.

2.0 Conducts activities to ensure the further training and development of the respiratory staff and other patient care personnel to ensure the quality of respiratory care services.

2.1 Orients new employees to ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures and standards of care.

2.2 In-services all staff in new therapeutics.

2.3 Functions as a resource for complex patient care problems to respiratory care staff and other health care providers to ensure professional development and quality of patient care.

2.4 Provides formal and/or clinical education to those individuals indicated in the time period directed.

2.5 Attends physician rounds as appropriate.

3.0 Ensures the continued professional educational development of staff to ensure clinical skills are up to date and staff are knowledgeable and capable of delivering the highest quality care

3.1 Maintains clinical competency in areas of responsibility to ensure the use of up to date methods in care giving.

3.2 Attends continuing education classes during the year.

3.3 Tracks and holds staff accountable for meeting educational goals

3.4 Attends all scheduled staff meetings or, if unable, accepts responsibility for reading staff meeting minutes.

3.5 Maintains membership in professional organizations and reads professional journal articles each month.

4.0 Follows all organization and departmental precautions and procedures in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment.

4.1 Operates all respiratory care equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner.

4.2 Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions requiring physical lifting or moving of patients or heavy equipment.

4.3 Demonstrates a thorough understanding of established emergency, infection control and/or universal precaution procedures as required.

4.4 Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

5.0 Provides departmental leadership in setting annual goals, developing strategy, and driving high performance

5.1 Works with Director of Respiratory Therapy to set, monitor, and meet targeted volume goals

5.2 Works closely with Respiratory Care Leadership to set, monitor, and meet targeted quality improvement goals

5.3 Builds buy-in to goals with staff; creates dialogue with staff to provide constructive feedback

5.4 Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment as appropriate to meet the operational demands of the department

5.5 Collects and analyzes data related to performance of department in order to convey key operating information to administration when requested

5.6 Responsible for communication within the Respiratory Care Department as well as throughout the organization to ensure that pertinent information is shared for effective operations

5.7 Assists in developing departmental budget within designated deadlines according to all budgetary policies and procedures

5.8 Works closely with Medical Directors on all of the above

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Bachelors’ degree is highly preferred.

Graduate of an AMA approved program in Respiratory Care.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Requires current license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Respiratory Therapist and registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care.

EXPERIENCE:

Requires at least 5 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist and 2-3 years supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

•Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and microbiology, pulmonary physics, pulmonary pathophysiology, advanced respiratory care mathematics, blood gas chemistry and pharmacology.

•Experienced with assisting in bronchoscopy and pulmonary function testing

•Understand specialty gas administration, lung-protective ventilation techniques, and artificial airway management.

•Interpersonal skills necessary to manage, develop, motivate, and discipline staff, interact with stakeholders across the hospital.

•Assure that all scheduled preventative maintenance is up to date. Working with the various vendors to ensure that equipment has necessary preventative maintenance and arrange for equipment loaners if necessary.

•Ability to explain hospital and department policies and procedures in difficult and complex patient care contexts

•Ability to evaluate performance of staff member and develop sound policies and procedures.

•Proficient in Microsoft Office packages Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

•Familiar with data analysis

•Experience in quality improvement and ability to interpret standard performance charts and metrics

•Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.

•Must present a positive, team-oriented attitude and a professional appearance.

•Assist with orientation and training of new staff.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS (Responsible for on-call, 24 hr. coverage, etc.):

Responsible to provide 24 hour coverage on a rotating basis.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Direct and oversee daily respiratory care operations within assigned inpatient and/or ambulatory service areas.

Provides direct clinical support as needed during periods of high volume, staffing gaps, or operational need to ensure continuity of patient care.

Supervise respiratory care staff, including scheduling, performance management, competency oversight, staff development, and corrective action as appropriate.

Monitor operational, clinical, and quality performance metrics to support departmental goals, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Collaborate with physicians, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to support safe, efficient, and high-quality respiratory care services.

Develop, implement, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and clinical workflows in accordance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.

Support staff education, onboarding, competency validation, and ongoing professional development initiatives.

Manage equipment, supply, and resource utilization to support operational readiness and patient care needs.

Participate in departmental planning, budgeting, quality improvement initiatives, and strategic growth efforts.

Collaborate with physicians, researchers, and interdisciplinary teams to support respiratory care initiatives related to clinical research, program development, and implementation of evidence-based practices.

Inpatient Respiratory Manager Responsibilities:

  • Oversee respiratory care operations across inpatient clinical areas including critical care, emergency, acute care, ECMO, and procedural environments.

  • Coordinate staffing and clinical operations to support fluctuating patient volumes, acuity, and emergent patient care needs.

  • Collaborate with medical directors, nursing leadership, and clinical teams to support evidence-based respiratory care practices and operational priorities.

  • Support readiness and operational oversight of critical respiratory care equipment including mechanical ventilators, transport ventilators, high-flow systems, and emergency respiratory equipment.

  • Participate in hospital-wide operational, safety, and throughput initiatives impacting inpatient respiratory care services.

Ambulatory Respiratory Manager Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee ambulatory respiratory services including pulmonary function testing, pulmonary rehabilitation, and respiratory support for pulmonary procedures.

  • Manage workflows, staffing models, and patient access for outpatient respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic services.

  • Ensure compliance with ATS pulmonary function testing standards and applicable ambulatory regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate with pulmonary physicians, procedural teams, and ambulatory operations to optimize outpatient respiratory service delivery.

  • Oversee equipment management for ambulatory respiratory services including pulmonary function testing systems, indirect calorimetry equipment, and pulmonary rehabilitation devices.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s degree in Respiratory Care required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care, Healthcare Administration, or other related healthcare fields required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of respiratory care clinical experience required.

An equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter “N/A”):

  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Experience in inpatient and/or ambulatory respiratory care operations preferred.
  • Experience with pulmonary function testing, pulmonary rehabilitation, or critical care respiratory services preferred.

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential required.
  • Current Massachusetts Respiratory Care license required.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) credential preferred. (Inpatient Manager)

Neonatal Pediatric Specialty (NPS) credential preferred. (Inpatient Manager)

Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) credential preferred. (Ambulatory Manager)

Membership in applicable professional Respiratory Care organizations preferred.

Compensation Range:

$66,000.00- $96,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
