POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Administrative Director and the Manager of Laboratory Revenue Integrity, the Laboratory Billing and Information Systems Coordinator assists in administrative operations with the laboratory information system and hospital information system and optimizes hospital reimbursement by ensuring complete and accurate information is available for billing for laboratory services. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Billing:

  • Performs billing processes for Outreach Locations- including patient record creation, registrations, unit charge entry, & preparation of daily billing reports
  • Addresses unbillable laboratory accounts- includes simple visit coding, service dates out of range, and miscellaneous lab billing
  • Acts as liaison with all practice managers to create billing processes which ensure proper ICD-10 coding to justify laboratory tests ordered by clinicians.
  • Enters ICD-10 diagnosis codes into the billing system for specific accounts.
  • Communicates with the billing staff about coding issues as needed.
  • Demonstrates or acquires knowledge of the ICD-10 coding process and regulations.
  • Creates daily and weekly processes to ensure that billing edits are reconciled and charges are released for billing.
  • Creates a weekly report and/or consolidated report as requested for the Administrative Director and Manager of Laboratory Revenue Integrity which lists outstanding charges that haven't been released.
  • Creates procedures and assists with training of laboratory support staff and laboratory technical staff to ensure accurate entry of data in laboratory information systems and hospital information systems.
  • Works with 3rd party payors and government insurers to secure prior-authorization for certain laboratory tests (i.e. molecular genetics)
  • Works with clinical services to secure and manager prior-authorizations for laboratory tests, gathers patient clinical information and demographics.
  • Ensures commitments for payment are documented and secured
  • Performs billing processes for Outreach Locations- including patient record creation, registrations, unit charge entry, & preparation daily billing reports
  • Assists with Lab Medicine Website maintenance
  • Assists with Lab Test Utilization activities
  • Assists with annual CPT updates

Other duties:

  • Serves as the lead for the department’s customer service team, particularly during down-time or emergency response
  • Responds to calls, supports results reporting, liaises closely with laboratory administration
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.

EDUCATION:

Associate’s degree (or equivalent combination of formal education and experience) in Health Information Management, nursing, a medical coding or healthcare related field, preferred.  Bachelor’s degree is a plus.

EXPERIENCE:

At least three years’ experience with ICD coding process and diagnostic codes in an acute care hospital setting.  Prefer coding experience in a laboratory medicine environment.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Work requires proficiency in the use of data management tools and software applications.
  • Work requires ability to learn, understand and utilize moderately complex billing codes and regulations.
  • Work requires ability to learn, understand, and utilize multiple information systems.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology required.
  • Knowledge and experience with laboratory and hospital information systems preferred.

Compensation Range:

$22.36- $31.25

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
