POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs journey level work by painting, finishing, and maintaining a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures. Prepares surfaces for painting and finishing; applies undercoats and finish coats using the full range of application methods and materials; mixes and matches paints and finishes; performs soda and water blasting;  maintains a clean environment and participates in the selection and proper storage of painting materials.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  • Graduation from high school (or GED), supplemented by completion of a Union, private (in-house), military, or trade school apprenticeship program that includes related theory and on-the-job work.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least three years as a journey-level painter in either a residential, commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting, with experience in both interior and exterior painting.

DUTIES

  • As directed, prepares, primes, sands, seals, patches and paints walls, surfaces, buildings, furniture and fixtures utilizing all types of painting materials such as varnish, lacquer, shellac, enamel, latex, mixing and pouring concrete, epoxy, water-proofing and heat resistant finishes.

  • Prepares surfaces for painting by washing, stripping, sanding, spackling as required. Prepares paint by thinning, if necessary.

  • May be required to move or rearrange furniture to accomplish work assignment.

  • May be required to mix and/or blend colors to match existing or desired tones and shades requiring sensitivity for color differences. Applies primer and finish coats, sands as needed.

  • Must be able to apply other wall finish details, e.g., wall base, wall guards, corner guards, etc.

  • May be required to utilize electrostatic painting equipment for painting office furniture and accessories.

  • Applies appropriate finishes to new construction, existing, multi-story buildings, alterations, and re-models.

  • Ensures areas of work are cordoned off for public protection. Inspects work for spills, drops, etc., to ensure high quality work. Uses materials in effective fashion to minimize consumption.

  • Operates, cleans and maintains all painting equipment, including brush, roll, sprayers and electrostatic sprayers, pumps, etc. Safely stores and labels all materials.

  • Performs graffiti response and removal using a variety of available products and soda blasting.

  • Maintains and performs basic repairs on painting equipment.

  • Erects scaffolding, rigging and ladders as necessary in a manner consistent with safety codes.

  • Estimates time and materials required. Enters and maintains room finish schedule data in the Computerized Maintenance Management System.

  • Keeps computerized records and submits reports of work performed.

  • Maintains appropriate service and repair records.

  • Performs removal, installation, and maintenance of signs, bulletin boards, artwork, etc.

  • Perform cycle counts and inventories equipment parts, paints, chemicals and supplies. Places orders for supplies when supplies are below par.

  • Maintains a clean and dust-free work environment.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledgeable in various painting methods and practices; ability to properly mix and match paints and varnishes, apply finishes to a wide variety of surfaces; estimate wait times and materials required on widely varied assignments.

  • Basic computer proficiency to keep computerized records and prepare reports.

  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions in English and ability to read, comprehend, and work from plans and blueprints.

  • Highly organized and ability to maintain proper productivity and work flow for multiple projects.

  • Must be a team player and able to maintain cooperative working relationships.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.

Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the trade. Must be able to safely handle hazardous materials.
