POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general direction performs a variety of very skilled repair and maintenance activities on sophisticated anesthesia, patient monitoring and other patient related equipment located in critical care and surgery. Performs in-depth troubleshooting and diagnostics on sophisticated technology.

Assists in the initiation and completion of clinical evaluations. Assists in the compilation of a sensible capital acquisition plan for the Medical Center's operating rooms. Assists in the development of educational lectures, equipment test protocols, and other management tools. Assists in the monitoring and documentation of hazard alerts (ECRI, FDA) as well as managing service contract support for critical care technology. Participates in an on-call rotation (nights, weekends and holidays).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Follows through independently and works with Biomedical Equipment Technician's to ensure that all tasks are completed and that the highest level of quality is ensured.  
  • Troubleshoots critical care related instrumentation in critical care or surgical areas while in use. Diagnoses the source of operational failure, if any, of patient related equipment Determines if the operation of the device is correct and to provide recommendations for improved use.  
  • Conducts complete assurance testing as required following general or specific written protocols for any patient care or related instrumentation under the jurisdiction of the department of Clinical Engineering and that is used in critical care and/or surgery.  
  • Performs emergency and routine repairs of instrumentation under the jurisdiction of the department of Clinical Engineering and that is used in critical and/or surgery. Applies a detailed understanding of schematic diagrams, block diagrams, theory of operation and a functional understanding of the physiological principles underlying the effectiveness of the device(s) in the critical care and/or surgical setting.  
  • Participates in the initiation and completion of clinical evaluations of critical care and surgical instrumentation. Assists in the specification and purchase of critical care and surgical instrumentation. Maintains an active and up to date product file on instrumentation. Interacts with manufacturer representatives and technical personnel as to specific operating characteristics.  
  • Assists the Manager of Critical Engineering in the preparation of a sensible capital acquisition program for the critical care and surgical areas.  
  • Collaborates with the Directors of Clinical Engineering and the Care Area Managers as to the appropriate contents and structure of detailed in-service education lectures for clinicians.  
  • Assists in the establishment of performance assurance procedures for patient-care instrumentation used in critical care and surgery.  
  • Assists in the collection and monitoring of product hazard alerts and user experience notices for agencies such as ECRI, FDA and Biomedical Safety Technology. Works with Manager and Assistant Manager of the department to provide follow-up reports as required as part of a detailed quality assurance program within the department of Clinical Engineering. Requires a detailed knowledge of government agencies such as Joint Commission, AHO, FDA, ECRI, ASA, OSHA and DPH.  
  • Attends various hospital committees as directed by Manager.  
  • Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.  
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.  
  • Perform other duties assigned or as necessary.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Work requires a Bachelors Degree in Biomedical or Clinical Engineering Sciences with two years of required experience or at least 5 years experience in anesthesia/biomedical instrumentation repair or Masters Degree in Biomedical or Clinical Engineering Sciences may be substituted for the required experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • ACCE or AMMI Certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two years of required experience or at least 5 years experience in anesthesia/biomedical instrumentation repair (Masters Degree in Biomedical or Clinical Engineering Sciences may be substituted for the required experience.)
