POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for coordination of community-based childbirth education instruction to meet the overall goal of increasing attendance and access, including the non-English speaking population.

Department: OBGYN

Schedule: Per Diem

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Serves as liaison between neighborhood health centers and BMC Childbirth Education program

  • Responds to telephone inquiries about neighborhood health center childbirth education needs

  • Coordinates participation of Birth Sisters in hospital and health center childbirth education classes as co-instructors

  • Coordinates participation of Birth Sisters in hospital and health center childbirth education classes as interpreters as needed

  • Coordinates childbirth education portion of training program new Birth Sisters

  • Maintains logs of Birth Sister childbirth education sessions, referral source, etc., and generates reports as requested.

  • Maintains files of Birth Sister education session evaluation, patient satisfaction surveys, and provider/caregiver feedback

  • Participates in classroom instruction

  • Contributes culturally competent  knowledge of community health education needs to program development, instructor certification program and evaluation

  • Participates in marketing

  • Participates in development of culturally competent teaching materials, maintains Birth Sister teaching materials, orders supplies as necessary

  • Works collaboratively with Childbirth Education Class Coordinator

  • Attends supervision and staff meetings

  • Participates in ongoing educational activities to enable competent performance of assigned administrative and clinical duties.

  • Completes annual mandatory hospital and department education activities.

  • Participates actively in professional organizations directly related to Childbirth Education.

  • Interprets and/or translates for patient, families and /or visitors when conversant in their native language as needed.

  • Maintains a presentable appearance in accordance with dress code requirements, including wearing a visible identification badge.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.

  • Utilizes hospital’s behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.

  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Current CBE certification or ability to becomes certified within 6 months of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

At least 5 years experience working with underserved, multicultural families required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).

  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.

  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial and ethnic populations

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to instill confidence and to advocate for patients and their family.

  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to multi-task, prioritize essential tasks and keep written documentation.

  • Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information

  • Proficient with standard Microsoft programs (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers.
