The Chief Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a member of the Cardiac Surgery team at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. The Chief APP will act in a clinical and administrative leadership role for the APP’s on the team. The APP will provide patient care to inpatients in the ICU and medical floors. Including the 10 bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and 16 bed Cardiothoracic step-down unit. The APP will function under the direction and supervision of the attending physician. The APP will provide high quality patient care and perform admission consults.
· The Cardiac Surgery APP will take on a leadership role in the implementation of the goals of the Center and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.
· Provide consistent and efficient communication between cardiac surgeons, CT surgery APPS, medical director, nursing educators and other interdisciplinary team members leading to a better organized and informed APP practice.
· Work collaboratively with all multidisciplinary teams to identify key issues and promote quality measures and enhance clinical operation within the Center for Advanced Cardiac Surgery.
· Establish and maintain a professional practice model that supports high quality, efficient care for patients and families in an environment that fosters professional mentorship, collaboration, and support.
· Lead and participate in team building, quality improvement and staff development.
· Facilitate communication between the cardiac surgery department ad hospital medical director and cardiac surgeons to help ensure consistency of CT surgery APP practice model.
· The Chief APP will perform detailed histories and physical exams, review patients’ medical records, order laboratories studies, radiological and diagnostic studies appropriate to patient's complaint, age, sex, race, and physical condition.
· Will participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds, record appropriate and accurate daily progress notes.
· The Chief APP will arrange for hospital admission and discharge at the direction of the supervising physician.
· The Chief APP will be responsible for creating and maintaining the APP schedules and assignments. Has the authority to assign call, hours on duty, vacation, etc.
· Responsible for implementation of changes in coverage and assignments as needed due to changes in patient need or skills available.
· Assist in the recruitment of new APPs to the service and help facilitate the on-boarding process and initial training period. Accountable for the orientation and oversight of APP’s on the team.
· Oversees the evaluation of the APP’s on the team with input from peers and supervising physicians.
· Assures accurate and timely billing by all APP’s as appropriate.
· Maintains records related to educational opportunities, accreditation, and registration for APP’s. Keeps records of individual APP collaborative agreements, prescriptive privileges, practice guidelines, licensure, certifications, and CME.
· Monthly review of activities and administrative issues with appropriate physicians and hospital administrator as indicated. This may include pertinent issues of coverage, clinical needs, etc. as may require clinical or administrative support and intervention.
· Performs other related duties as needed.
Chief Clinical APP Responsibilities:
· Chief Cardiac Surgery APP will take on a leadership role in the implementation of the goals of St Elizabeth’s Medical Center as well as the Cardiac Surgery Department.
· Provide a consistent and efficient line of communication between our cardiac surgeons, CT surgery APPs, medical director, nursing educators, and other interdisciplinary team members leading to a better organized and informed APP practice.
· Work collaboratively with all multidisciplinary teams to identify key issues and promote quality measures and enhance clinical operations within our department.
· Establish and maintain a professional practice model that supports high-quality, efficient care for patients and families in an environment that fosters professional mentorship, collaboration, and support.
· Lead and participate in team building, quality improvement, and staff development.
· Facilitate communication between the cardiac surgery department and hospital medical director and cardiac surgeons to help ensure consistency of CT surgery APP practice model.
· Facilitate delegation of certain roles of the CT Surgery APP team as agreed upon by the team, medical director and cardiac surgery department.
· Responsible for the agenda and leading the monthly CT surgery APP meetings.
· Understand CVOR operations and work in conjunction with CVOR staff regarding equipment, scheduling, and other operational needs and identify key issues to promote clinical operations within our department.
· Operating under the guidance and direction of our cardiac surgeons, should be able to perform EVH harvesting and first assist in OR
· In addition to above, the Cardiac Surgery Chief APP will also be required to work shifts on cardiothoracic stepdown/ICU unit and must have proficiency in ICU bedside procedures such as central line placement, arterial line placement, temporary venous pacer placement, PA line placement, chest tube removal, epicardial wires removal, operation of temporary pacemakers, and management of ICU vasoactive medications, ventilator management, and MCS device management. Will also require providing step-down/ICU/OR patient care including preoperative and postoperative management, and perform inpatient consults, admitting and discharging patients.
Qualifications:
· Graduation from an accredited APP program.
· Board Certification
· Massachusetts license to practice as an APP
· DEA / Massachusetts Control Substance licensure
· Five years of clinically relevant experience in critical care required, proven clinical skills for rapid assessment and action in high acuity setting.
· Two years in a leadership or management role
· Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team and administration.
· Current BLS and ACLS certification
· Strong oral and written communication skills required
