Location: Boston, MA

Schedule: 40 hours per week, Evenings

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, assists the anesthesiologist in the set-up and preparation of equipment for surgical procedures and provides preventative maintenance on medical equipment. Assists the anesthesiologist with patient preparation and provides additional assistance as necessary during the surgical procedure.

Reports to the Associate Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and receives direction from the respective Anesthesia Floor Leaders.  Assists the Anesthesia Floor Leaders with various resources as requested. Demonstrates ability to organize time evidenced by completion of work assignments within shift.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs the assigned duties to assist the anesthesia staff in safe, efficient delivery of patient care:

  • Room preparation (Beginning of Day and Turnover). Disposes of dirty items remaining from previous case

  • Clean surfaces and equipment according to defined infection control guidelines. This includes anesthesia machine and anesthesia cart surfaces, monitoring equipment and other patient care equipment (pumps, fluid warmers and Bair Huggers).

  • Setup of necessary equipment (anesthesia machines, airway management devices, fluid warming and pressure infusers, ultrasounds and monitoring equipment and suction canister and tubing).

  • Place anesthesia breathing circuit on the anesthesia machine and perform the leak test. Restock anesthesia carts following the approved inventory checklist

  • Room preparation at the end of the day (Terminal Cleaning). Disposes of dirty items left over from previous case

  • Clean surfaces and equipment according to infection control guidelines. This includes anesthesia machine and anesthesia cart surfaces, monitoring equipment and other patient care equipment (pumps, fluid warmers and Bair Huggers).

  • Place unopened anesthesia circuit, unopened mask and unopened Yankauer suction tip on the anesthesia machine. Ensure that there are 2 unopened laryngoscope handles, 2 clean laryngoscope batteries in the chargers. Unopened MAC 3 & 4 and Miller 2 & 3 blades.

  • Works with Materials Management to maintain appropriate stock levels of all items. Coordinates with the Service Line Coordinator for ordering Non-Lawson items

Equipment

  • Maintain cleanliness

  • Inform anesthesia floor leader and biomedical engineering about malfunctioning equipment. Sequesters and labels accordingly malfunctioning equipment.

Airway carts.

  • Maintain cleanliness

  • Ensures equipment is in good working order

  • Maintains adequate stock levels following the inventory checklist

  • Ensures that an intact snap lock is in place

Block carts

  • Maintain cleanliness

  • Ensure adequate supplies according to approved checklists

Intubation box

  • Maintain cleanliness

  • Ensure adequate supplies according to the approved checklist.

  • Intact snap lock

Pediatric carts

  • Maintain Cleanliness

  • Ensure  adequate supplies according to the approved checklist

Labor and Delivery

  • Setup of necessary equipment (anesthesia machines, airway management devices, fluid warming and pressure infusers, ultrasounds and suction) as needed

  • Restock Labor and delivery anesthesia carts and following the approved inventory checklist. Restock epidural carts following the approved inventory checklist

  • Dispose of dirty items left over from a previous case

  • Clean surfaces and equipment at the end of each case according to infection control guidelines. This includes anesthesia machine and anesthesia cart surfaces, monitoring devices and other patient care equipment as necessary

Endoscopy

  • Setup of necessary equipment (anesthesia machines, airway management devices, fluid warming and pressure infusers, ultrasounds and suction) as needed

  • Restock Off-Site anesthesia carts following the approved inventory checklist

  • Dispose of dirty items left over from a previous case

  • Clean surfaces and equipment at the end of each case according to infection control guidelines. This includes anesthesia machine and anesthesia cart surfaces, monitoring devices and other patient care equipment as necessary

Off-Site

  • Setup of necessary equipment (anesthesia machines, airway management devices, fluid warming and pressure infusers, ultrasounds and suction) as needed

  • Transport equipment from the main Operating Rooms as needed on a case per case basis.

  • Restock Off-Site anesthesia carts following the approved inventory checklist. Dispose of dirty items left over from a previous case

  • Clean surfaces and equipment at the end of each case according to infection control guidelines. This includes anesthesia machine and anesthesia cart surfaces, monitoring devices and other patient care equipment as necessary

POC testing (Glucometers and ACT)

  • Maintain cleanliness and perform QC according to schedule

  • Maintains up to date QC supplies

  • Maintains up to date testing supplies

  • Reports malfunction to POC lab personnel and anesthesia floor leader.

Miscellaneous

  • Removes anesthesia trash from the operating room and dispose according to hospital protocols. Exchange the anesthesia sharp boxes as necessary

  • Dispose of urine left at the end of the case according to hospital protocol. Cleans IV poles, EKG leads and Blood Pressure Cuffs

  • Pre-clean TEE probes and bronchoscopes and bring to CPD in the appropriate container. Ensures proper storage of bronchoscopes and TEE probes in scope cabinet after they return from CPD.

  • Pre-clean laryngoscope blades and handle shells and bring to CPD for reprocessing.

  • Remove laryngoscope battery inserts and clean following hospital protocol. Place battery inserts in charger.

  • Disposes of dirty syringes and needles in accordance with hospital procedures and protocols. Applies sanitizing techniques essential for optimal operation of operating room equipment following Hospital protocols and guidelines

  • Maintain the gas cylinder storage racks according to Hospital and regulatory guidelines separating full and empty tanks.

  • Communicates with Anesthesia Floor Leader and front desk when leaving the OR floor and at the end of shift. Provides Assistance to the anesthesiologist during the preparation for anesthesia, the induction of anesthesia and throughout the surgical procedure as necessary.

C. Citizenship

  • Assists, as necessary, in orienting new personnel 

  • Attends in-service training programs and other relevant courses for professional development. Utilizes Hospital’s Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the Hospital’s mission.

  • Follows established Hospital infection control and safety procedures including Universal Precautions (always) and specific isolation precautions as needed.

  • Establishes good interpersonal relationships with other staff, patients and families.

  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient’s rights. Is consistently punctual and shows a responsible and dependable pattern of attendance and adherence to work requirements.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Work requires a high school diploma or a state high school equivalency (GED).

  • BLS certified preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience in a similar setting would be a plus; however, on the job training will be provided.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Work requires the ability to stand and walk, for extended periods in the process of operating equipment, arranging instruments trays and equipment carts, conducting inventory of and dispensing supplies. 

  • Ability to push/pull carts of instruments and/or equipment weighing up to 200 pounds

  • Work requires the ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious disease, contaminated medical/surgical instruments and equipment, and hazardous material (disinfectant chemicals, gases, steam) in the work environment, requiring observance of “Universal Precautions” by wearing protective clothing, gloves, goggles, and the observance of safe handling practices.

  • Work requires effective verbal and written communication skills in order to work with various clinical personnel, resolve problems and to properly identify and label supplies for inventory purposes.​

NOTE: Position requires on-call responsibility every 7th weekend
