POSITION SUMMARY:

As a key member of the HR Leadership Team, the Vice President, Total Rewards reports directly to the Boston Medical Center Health System’s SVP and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) and serves in a critical enterprise-wide leadership capacity. This role is responsible for setting the strategic direction and overseeing the execution of all aspects of Total Rewards—including Executive Compensation, Broad-Based Compensation, Benefits, Wellness, and Payroll. The VP supports all entities within BMC Health System, including corporate, clinical, and frontline employee populations.

Develop and implement a forward-thinking Total Rewards strategy that attracts, retains, and motivates top talent, while aligning with BMC Health System’s evolving business goals and culture.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Total Rewards Strategy & Delivery

  • Define and lead an integrated Total Rewards strategy that ensures market-competitive compensation, equitable pay practices, and innovative benefit offerings.
  • Oversee executive compensation design, benchmarking, and the preparation of Compensation Committee materials in partnership with the CHRO.
  • Ensure benefit programs are inclusive, cost-effective, and responsive to a diverse workforce—including health, welfare, retirement, wellness, and leave offerings.
  • Monitor external trends and proactively evolve rewards offerings to remain competitive in the dynamic healthcare and labor markets.

Total Rewards Oversight & Program Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight for the Benefits, Compensation, and Payroll functions, ensuring programs are competitive, equitable, and aligned with organizational and workforce needs.
  • Ensure compliance, efficiency, and effectiveness across all Total Rewards programs, working closely with functional leads to drive continuous improvement and alignment.
  • Partner with Finance, Legal, Communications, and other internal stakeholders to ensure alignment, integration, and transparent governance of Total Rewards strategies.
  • Support team development and capability-building within Benefits, Compensation, and Payroll, fostering collaboration and accountability.

Strategic Business Partnership & Leadership Influence

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CHRO and senior leadership, providing insights on talent market dynamics and internal equity.
  • Support the CHRO in developing high-quality materials for Board and Compensation Committee governance.
  • Collaborate closely with clinical, corporate, and operational leaders to align rewards strategies with business priorities.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing Total Rewards team; foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and enterprise collaboration.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure enterprise compliance with all relevant laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ACA, and evolving pay transparency laws).
  • Lead enterprise-wide pay equity analyses and maintain strong total rewards governance frameworks.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in Total Rewards and payroll ideally within complex, multi-entity organizations
  • Proven success leading executive compensation and benefits strategy
  • Deep understanding of healthcare market dynamics, labor market trends, and total rewards best practices
  • Experience supporting CHROs and Boards on governance and pay-related topics
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to translate data into strategic insights
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree and/or HR certifications preferred
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
