Systems Medical Director, Psychiatric Emergency Services

Position Summary

Boston University Medical Group (BUMG) is seeking an accomplished psychiatrist to serve as Systems Medical Director, Psychiatric Emergency Services. This physician leader will provide strategic, administrative, and clinical oversight of Psychiatric Emergency Services across the Boston Medical Center Health System, working in close partnership with leadership from the Departments of Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine.

The Systems Medical Director will oversee psychiatrists and psychiatric advanced practice providers (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners and other APRNs) practicing within the Emergency Departments across the health system. This role is ideal for an experienced psychiatrist with a demonstrated record of clinical excellence, operational leadership, physician engagement, and program development.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical and Administrative Leadership

  • Provide direct medical leadership and oversight for Psychiatric Emergency Services across the health system.
  • Supervise and support psychiatrists and psychiatric APRNs practicing within Emergency Department settings.
  • Establish and maintain clinical standards, protocols, and best practices to ensure high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care.
  • Promote a culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and continuous performance enhancement.

Strategic Program Development

  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives to improve psychiatric emergency care delivery, access, patient flow, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with system leadership to identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and integration of psychiatric services.
  • Lead efforts to standardize clinical operations and workflows across multiple sites.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Department of Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine leadership to align clinical, operational, and financial goals.
  • Foster strong relationships among physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, social work, behavioral health teams, and hospital administration.
  • Serve as a key liaison between Psychiatric Emergency Services, Psychiatry service lines, hospital departments and community partners.

Quality and Performance Management

  • Monitor quality and patient experience measures, operational performance indicators, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on behavioral health emergency care.
  • Support accreditation, credentialing, peer review, and performance evaluation activities.

Workforce Development

  • Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain high-performing psychiatric providers.
  • Support professional development and leadership growth among physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Promote team engagement, wellness, and a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

Required

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience in psychiatry, behavioral health, emergency psychiatry, or hospital-based psychiatric services.
  • Demonstrated experience leading physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Strong operational, financial, and organizational leadership skills.

Preferred

  • Experience leading psychiatric emergency services, consultation-liaison psychiatry, crisis services, or behavioral health programs within an academic medical center or integrated health system.
  • Track record of quality improvement, program development, and change management initiatives.
  • Academic experience with teaching, mentorship, or scholarly activities.
