Boston Medical Center (BMC) is excited to announce the Surgical Scrub LPN Program in the Operating Room starting July 2024.

The Surgical Scrub LPN Program in the Operating Room provides a hybrid learning opportunity that will involve online modules & videos, classroom didactic, hands on skill labs, clinical preceptorship in the OR and journaling post-clinical. BMC specific orientation and learning will continue past the beyond the training program and enable LPNs to confidently to work in all of our surgical specialties.

At the conclusion of your training, you will be placed in your final position per your offer letter. 

Positions in the LPN Program will be 40 hours and 4 (10) hour shifts during your orientation period. The specific shift rotation will be determined near the end of orientation (based on the length of the orientation).

The Surgical Scrub LPN Program Application Process:

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a member of the surgical team, the Licensed Professional Nurse, fulfilling the scrub role, provides patient care during surgical procedures by providing an aseptic and safe environment.  Duties include prepping and sterilizing rooms for surgery, transporting, passing instruments and providing assistance to surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other staff during surgery. Uses technical and aseptic techniques to ensure methodology is in compliance with established sterile standards and procedures of maintaining a sterile field an handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Provides an aseptic, safe, appropriately equipped and functional surgical environment. Duties include, but are not limited to:

OPERATING ROOM:

  • Checks supplies/instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensures they are working properly.
  • Opens sterile supplies and sets up the table for each surgical procedure.
  • Directly assists the surgical team during surgical procedures, passing instruments and supplies as needed.
  • Accountable for proper surgical instrument preparation, function, storage, and repair.
  • Performs appropriate surgical counts according to facility policy.
  • Organizes and audits case carts for current and upcoming cases according to the preference card.
  • Works in collaboration with the operating room circulator prior to surgical procedure by preparing the operating room, gathering supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the function/use of sterilization equipment. Properly identifies when instrumentation is sterile and ensures proper process is followed when instrumentation is not properly sterilized or becomes contaminated. 
  • Handles, labels, and transports specimens properly.
  • Performs in-between case cleaning turnover of the operating room. Promotes department/program and hospital’s mission, by including the following:
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
  • Utilizes hospital’s behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the department’s and the hospital’s goals.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Participates in teaching and precepting of various types of students and new employees.
  • Performs other duties as needed

EDUCATION:

Technical School Diploma LPN Program

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Active LPN Licensure

EXPERIENCE:

No previous experience necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):

  • Ability to effectively speak read and write English
  • Ability to accurately interpret and use medical terminology and abbreviations
  • Computer proficiency to access and enter computerized data/information.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with patients, families, physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Organizational skills to effectively set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work
