The Perioperative Business Leadership Position provides clinical and operational leadership in the perioperative environment. S/he will be responsible for reengineering, operational systems redesign, facility utilization, and role redesign in addition to projects requiring high level analysis and execution that may have hospital-wide implications. This leader may be responsible for facilitating and responding to external and internal audits by regulatory and/or consulting agencies.

This position will report to the COO with a dotted line into the Chief Nursing Officer to deliver best in class quality, safety, and financial performance in the Perioperative area. This leader will oversee the following Perioperative functions: clinical care (CPD, OR, GI, PACU/POHA/PAT), capital and operational budgets, surgical scheduling, strategic planning, utilization/efficiency reporting, perioperative billing, information systems technical support, inventory management, project management and all administrative staff.

In addition to the direct oversight described above, the Sr Director of Perioperative Services will have a dotted line to the Chief Nursing Officer. This is important to maintain the direct line of oversight of all nursing operations at St. Elizabeth’s by our CNO. This will also require that the Sr Director is comfortable working in a matrixed environment and can work and lead collaboratively to achieve the desired outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

·       Oversees daily administrative operations of department. Oversees the following functions: capital and operational budgets, surgical scheduling, strategic planning, utilization/efficiency reporting, perioperative billing, information systems technical support, inventory management, project management and all administrative staff.  Prepares, monitors and adjusts staff schedules and plans, prioritizes and delegates work assignments in order to support patient care and coverage requirements. Provides assistance and support for staff in identifying and resolving related issues and system problems.

·       Directs and supervises administrative and support service managers. Assists in recruitment and selection of new personnel and monitors performance to ensure conformance with established practice standards and guidelines. Provides guidance and feedback, assists in preparing performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary and other personnel actions as warranted.

·       Partners with surgical chiefs, and hospital nursing and administrative leaders (supply chain, finance, nursing administration) to enhance partnerships that improve efficiency and effectiveness of perioperative operations. 

·       Serves as a member of the OR Governance and Surgical Executive Committees.

·       Develops, implements, evaluates and oversees provision of departmental administrative staff education programs, including orientation, in-service and continuing education for support personnel, in accordance with established goals and priorities. Assesses and evaluates staff learning needs and develops and implements corresponding training/education programs.

Participates in departmental policy and program planning and development. Monitors and evaluates departmental operations and develops, recommends and implements changes in systems, policies and

·       procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency. Provides oversight for decision support for strategic planning, budget preparation/management and other areas as requested, identifying issues, collecting and analyzing data and preparing related reports and recommendations.

·       Maintains working relationship with Directors and medical staff, nursing and other hospital departments in order to evaluate and resolve issues/problems and ensures compliance with related regulatory and accreditation requirements. Serves on committees and task forces within the hospital and community.

·       Assists Nursing and Medical Directors in development and maintenance of departmental quality/operations improvement program. Develops, recommends and implements quality and efficiency metrics and measurement criteria. Monitors data system integrity and prepares periodic reports in accordance with program requirements. Prepares analyses and recommends and implements changes in systems, methods and procedures as indicated.

·       Monitors and maintains policies and procedures governing departmental administrative operations. Assigns and/or works with department staff to review and update designated manuals, policies and procedures. Communicates changes in policies/procedures and monitors and ensures staff compliance.

·       Provides oversight and analytical leadership for the development of annual budgets and financial plans consistent with the Department’s programmatic requirements and the Hospital’s strategic plans and operational objectives.  

·       Maintains professional knowledge and skills through participation and leadership in professional organizations, attendance at conferences and continuing education programs, and other related activities.   Serves as a mentor and role model, providing guidance, assistance and learning opportunities for staff.

·       Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with key members of IS to insure that departmental systems are aligned with IS strategies and standards. Works with IS to define new standards as technology advances are made.

·       Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with key members of the Department of Finance to insure that departmental financial initiatives and review are aligned with Hospital strategies and standards.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Significant management and clinical or administrative experience.
  • Experience working in a competitive, fast-paced healthcare environment, (complex, multi-service line matrix structured organization).
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and leading programs, including exercising accountability, decision making, time management, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative team player who can work closely with others to develop and maintain a team-oriented, professional, patient and physician-centric environment.

Education

Bachelor's degree in nursing required, master’s degree required

Experience:

10 years+ of experience in perioperative care preferred

2-4 years of management/leadership experience required

Certification/Licensure: 

RN License in the State of Massachusetts required; CNOR or CPAN or CAPA or NE-BC or NEA-BC certification preferred

 Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook,
