The Office of Community Engagement & External Affairs is dedicated to fostering strong relationships between the hospital and the diverse communities it serves. Rooted in BMC’s commitment to health equity and social justice, the Office of Community Engagement & External Affairs works to bridge the gap between healthcare services and community needs, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to high-quality care and support by developing programming, events, and initiatives. This department is responsible for building and maintaining relationships in federal, state, and local government, along with faith leaders, corporate partners, and community-based organizations. 

The Senior Project Manager, Community Engagement, will oversee process improvement, project management, and administrative responsibilities, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Community Engagement & External Affairs team. This role will be responsible for leading and executing the Community Engagement strategic plan. This role requires excellent communication and organizational skills to foster positive relationships and ensure the successful execution of community engagement initiatives and events.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Community Partnership: Collaborate with local organizations, faith-based groups, advocacy organizations, and government agencies to build and sustain partnerships that uplift and impact communities by way of sponsorships, tabling at or hosting events, letters of support, and more. The goal of this community partnership is to create sustainable impact, build feedback loops, and inform system initiatives.

  • Programmatic Support: The Sr. Project Manager will support initiatives that aim to improve health outcomes, which may include programs tailored to meet the specific needs of various demographic groups and individuals with chronic health conditions.

  • Strategic Alignment: The Sr. Project Manager, with oversight and direction from the Vice President of Community Engagement and External Affairs, will help to inform and be responsible for the execution of the department’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with system leadership.

  • Engagement Activities:

National: Organize, host, and participate in local, state, and national events to elevate the work BMCHS at a national level. This requires someone skilled in

organizing large-scale events and interfacing with government, corporate, and entertainment leaders.

Local: Manage participation in community events, health fairs, educational workshops, and outreach programs designed to educate and empower

community members. We participate in these activities to raise awareness about health issues, provide resources, and encourage preventive care. The Sr.

Project Manager will be responsible for liaising with external event organizers, organizing BMC’s presence, and ultimately the successful execution of

these activities. The Sr. Project Manager will be required to work internally with various BMC departments to align community engagement efforts.

Specific duties and requirements:

  • Event & Project Management:

    • Serve as the lead project manager for the Community Engagement & External Affairs Office, acting as the primary liaison between external community, government/advocacy organizations, faith-based organizations and internal teams, such as the Marketing and Communication Department and operational units.

    • Collaborate with clinical service lines and external community stakeholders to enhance and expand partnerships, with the focus on driving improved patient outcomes and alignment with Boston Medical Center Health System's strategic goals.

    • Implement, maintain, and document processes and workflows for community events to create impactful experiences.

    • Prepare reports, briefings, and presentations for a variety of audiences on health equity and community engagement initiatives.

  •  Administrative Support:

    • Responsible for intentional collaboration with VP’s Executive Assistant to strategically manage VP’s calendar, track priorities, and assist with meeting preparation for the Vice-President of Community Engagement and External Affairs

    • Support the Vice-President of Community Engagement and External Affairs in developing events, programs and initiatives, meeting agendas, and presentation materials in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

    • Manage and triage inbound requests to the Community Engagement team, supporting leadership with special projects such as events, campaigns, and presentations.

    • Manage the implementation and timely maintenance of the Customer Relationship Management database. Experience with Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT is a plus.

  • Budget Management:

    • Proactively manage department budget, specifically event and sponsorship budgets. Responsible for tracking expenses and preparing financial reports for the VP and senior leadership.

  • Strategy:

    • In partnership with VP of Community Engagement and External Affairs, ensure regular alignment with System initiatives, strategic goals, and messaging alignment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., communications, public relations, event management) or equivalent experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • None

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-7 years of experience in community engagement, event planning, strategic project management, and/or marketing/communication roles

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities, embrace new challenges, and track records of delivering results.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Strong communication and engagement skills with diverse populations, with established community connections in the Boston area being a plus.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software applications.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.

  • Experience with budget management, financial reporting, and community engagement principles and practices.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, and exceptionally skilled at engaging with external stakeholders (e.g. government leaders, senior corporate partners, etc.) Experience influencing and collaborating, without formal authority.
