POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Nurse Manager, Emergency Department provides strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency Department to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care and achievement of departmental goals. This role has broad accountability for clinical operations, workforce leadership, quality and regulatory performance, staffing, and resource management, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and a culture of continuous improvement. Working under the direction of the ACNO, the Senior RN Manager exercises independent judgment in overseeing day-to-day operations and supervising nursing personnel and frontline leaders. The position significantly influences patient outcomes, employee engagement, operational efficiency, and the Emergency Department's contribution to organizational performance and strategic priorities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Operational Leadership and Clinical Oversight (30%): Provides strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency Department to ensure safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. Maintains standards of clinical practice consistent with Nursing Division expectations, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practice. Oversees care delivery processes to optimize patient outcomes, patient flow, and departmental effectiveness. Serves as a senior clinical resource for complex patient care situations, triage concerns, discharges, etc.
  • People Leadership and Workforce Development (25%): Leads, coaches, and develops staff to foster engagement, accountability, and professional growth. Manages recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and retention initiatives. Partners with nursing education resources to support orientation, competency validation, and ongoing staff development.
  • Quality, Safety, and Performance Improvement (20%): Leads quality, patient safety, and regulatory readiness initiatives within the department. Monitors quality, patient experience, and operational metrics to identify improvement opportunities and implement corrective actions. Participates in unit-based CQI activities and assists staff in identifying and monitoring the quality indicators that are most pertinent to patient care goals.
  • Strategic Staffing and Resource Management (15%): Develops staffing plans aligned with patient acuity, volume trends, and operational needs. Monitors productivity and resource utilization to support efficient operations and fiscal responsibility. Partners with ANCO on budget planning and identifies current and future equipment and capital needs.
  • Interdisciplinary and Organizational Collaboration (10%): Partners with physicians, care management, and interdisciplinary teams to improve care coordination and patient throughput. Represents the Emergency Department on committees, task forces, and organizational initiatives. Supports the Medical Center's mission, values, and Nursing Division goals through active leadership participation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • 5+ years of Emergency Department clinical RN experience and 2+ years management experience
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Training in Performance Improvement, total Quality Management, and/or Continuous Quality Improvement.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years management experience in an Emergency Department preferred
  • Master's degree

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Current license to practice Nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • ACLS, BLS & PALS certification required

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS PREFERRED:

  • CEN strongly preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Ability to effectively manage expense budget as allocated.
  • Ability to make formal presentations relative to clinical, operational, educational research and financial issues.
  • Ability to problem-solve and work collaboratively towards defined patient care outcomes.
  • Must have knowledge of Emergency Nursing.

Compensation Range:

$118,500.00- $172,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
