POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Pathology Laboratory Supervisors or the Senior Manager of Anatomic Pathology, performs a variety of duties, including cross-campus transporting of surgical tissue, cytology specimens, or other biospecimens (e.g. blood, urine); surgical pathology blocks and slides; laboratory reagents and supplies, and consult pathology specimens to and from areas within the hospital to the main pathology laboratory located at 670 Albany Street 3rd floor. Assists decedent affairs office with patient transport and preparation for autopsy as necessary.

Works in the pathology department reviewing and editing surgical pathology gross descriptions and final diagnoses, prepared by the pathologist assistants using dragon software. Ensuring that the transcription and grammar is correct, complete, and has a consistent style.

Type’s surgical pathology final reports into the laboratory information system. Ensuring outside consult reports are typed in a timely manner into the patient’s pathology report. Coordinates frozen section procedures between the operating room and the pathology department. Packaging slides/block requests to various outside hospitals for 2nd opinions.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Duties and Responsibilities: (These are a general summary and not all inclusive)

  • Transports specimens, equipment and related items and supplies safely to and from areas within the hospital to 670 Albany Street in a timely manner. 
  • Verifies specimen identification with at least two patient identifiers, maintains logs for all patient specimen pick-up and delivery.
  • Checks patient last and first name, documents specimen delivery time, counts specimen, including specimens from the clinical areas and operating rooms. Submits log to the main pathology lab located at 670 Albany Street. Collects and delivers the completed specimen log forms to the main pathology laboratory as required.     
  • Delivers and picks-up blocks and slides from the Dermatopathology department located at 609 Albany Street.
  • Carries pager while on duty and responds to pager in a timely manner (call back with 5 minutes). 
  • Deliver surgical pathology supplies and reagents to the clinical areas and operating rooms.
  • Delivers archived specimens to the morgue and other specimen storage areas.
  • Transports surgical specimens in biohazard bags across campus by doing continuous rounding throughout the day. This includes large specimens and limbs. Prepared to transport specimens up to thirty pounds
  • Performs all duties with a customer service focus. 
  • Represents the hospital and Pathology department in a professional, courteous manner in all dealings with other hospital employees, vendors, patients and visitors.  Treats patients in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and patient rights.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Work requires a high school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires one year experience in customer service or supply chain. Laboratory experience preferred but not required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Requires periodic heavy lifting and pushing, pulling, walking and standing.
  • Requires the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate clearly to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
  • Work requires demonstrated ability to effectively speak, read, and write English.
  • Work requires ability to follow instructions, work independently and efficiently to complete assigned work.
