Position: Research Technician, Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM)

Location: Boston, MA

Schedule: 40 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator(s) and lab research supervisor, the Research Technician provides research, laboratory and safety support. Utilizes solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques in areas such as molecular biology, genetics and cell biology. Participates in the planning and execution of experiments & projects and evaluation and interpretation of results. Providesassistance to students or other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. May be assigned independent projects. Assists in providing lab infrastructure so that such studies can be performed effectively.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

May perform some or all of the following:

  • Assists with set up, performance and interpreting results of routine analysis.
  • Performs routine experiments and techniques (such as Western blotting, enzymatic and spectrophotometer, fluorometric and signaling assays) according to established protocols.
  • Reports results and issues encountered to the Principal Investigator in a timely manner. 
  • Assists with husbandry, collects samples; maintains data records. May assist with animal dissections and muscle physiology experiments.
  • Performs data interpretation and summarization of semi-intricate & more complex data. Performs research literature searches as needed.
  • Maintains clear, concise, accurate and legible records. Presents weekly written report and answers questions regarding the performance of the experiments and the integrity of the data.
  • Ensure proper handling, storing and freezing of specimens and supplies, disposes of waste according to policy and ensures proper use of equipment and facilities. Maintains appropriate laboratory inventory and orders related supplies as needed.
  • Provides training and technical supervision to students and visiting researchers.  Provides assistance when needed.
  • Assists other laboratory sections when needed or directed. Utilizes hospital’s cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
  • Reports all incidents, safety hazards or accidents to appropriate personnel. Utilizes hospital’s cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • College level courses in biology, chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and/or laboratory sciences are also required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year experience in a laboratory setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of safe handling procedures of hazardous materials.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to learn and integrate procedures and knowledge relating to lab protocols and techniques under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Lab Supervisor.

  • Good computer skills, including data entry and use of spreadsheet and/or database.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks as dictated by the research schedule.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, (e.g. pipetting, use of microbalance), serial dilutions, and enthusiasm to learn new skills.

  • Previous experience with animal studies and safe handling is beneficial.

  • General understanding of translational and clinical research and the federal requirements for ethical patient treatment.

This position is grant funded through 8/31/2029. There may be opportunity beyond this grant funding for position integration into ongoing operations.
