Position Summary:

The Operating Room RN provides care that addresses the specific needs of age groups from infant to elderly and is also individualized to a variety of needs specific to impairments such as hearing, sight, substance abuse, non-English speaking, and potential victims of abuse. The Operating Room RN incorporates knowledge and understanding of our commitment to patient rights, our mission, vision, and values into nursing practice at St Elizabeth Medical Center. The RN is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations.

Job Responsibilities:

Operating Room Primary Responsibilities:

1. Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.

2. Develop an individualized perioperative plan of care.

3. Implement the plan of care using the following interventions:

a. Protect patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects.

b. Perform count procedures to protect patient from unintended retained foreign objects.

c. Perform interventions necessary to ensure patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.

d. Manage patient’s specimen(s) in the appropriate manner.

e. Administer medication(s) appropriately.

f. Perform interventions to maintain patient's wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.

g. Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.

h. Perform interventions to protect patient from infection.

i. Protect patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.

4. Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.

5. Transfer care as appropriate.

6. Delegate tasks as appropriate according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.

7. Document nursing care.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 
  • Previous OR experience preferred. 
  • Previous Med-Surge experience preferred. 
  • 1+ years of RN experience preferred. 
  • Certification in basic life support (BLS) required. 
  • Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN or BSN (preferred) 
  • Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty, certification required for certain practice areas 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills 
  • Physical ability to meet job responsibilities 
  • Basic computer proficiency 
  • Fluency in another language a plus
