POSITION SUMMARY:
The Pulmonary Function Testing Therapist under the direction of the Respiratory Care Department Manager performs a variety of pulmonary and diagnostic procedures including the evaluation of preliminary data and recommending or performing testing per department policy. This is done in a variety of settings including the ICUs, Operating rooms, procedural areas and the PFT Labs, which include the pulmonary clinic at Brighton Marine.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
1. Collects and evaluates relevant clinical history from patients. Records accurately all pertinent data needed to complete laboratory forms per established department policy. Measures and records accurately all physical data from patients (height, weight) per established department policy.
2. Instructs patients and elicits cooperation in performing diagnostic Pulmonary Function testing and pulmonary procedures
3. Performs pulmonary function tests including spirometry, before and after bronchodilator therapy, flow volume loop, maximal voluntary ventilation, lung volume measurements, diffusion capacity and methacholine challenge.
4. Performs Maximal Inspiratory and Expiratory airway pressure measurements.
5. Assists physicians performing both diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies in the Procedure Suite, the OR and at the bedside.
6. Assists providers in performing all pleural procedures including, but not limited to, Pleurex insertion, chest tube insertion, Thoracentesis and transcutaneous biopsies.
7. Monitors respiratory status of patients during pulmonary procedures. Responsible for troubleshooting and correcting equipment issues used during bronchoscopy.
8. Successfully completes pulmonary procedure competency which includes pre and post cleaning process for any equipment used.
9. Performs Simple and Complex Stress Tests.
10. Draws arterial blood gas samples per departmental policy
11. May assist and provide testing for various established IRB research studies
12. Sets up and calibrates equipment as required.
13. Performs clerical duties including setting up patient appointments, filing reports, sending out copies of reports to primary care physicians.

14. Enter charges and documentation for services provided into an electronic medical record system in a timely fashion. 15. Maintains Pulmonary Function Therapy (PFT) Laboratory and Procedure suite in a clean and organized manner. 16. Orders and restocks supplies as needed
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
1. Minimum of an Associate’s degree or equivalent in Respiratory Care. 2. 1-2 years Pulmonary Function Testing experience
1. Current or working towards Bachelor Degree in Respiratory Care or other health care related curriculum. 2. 3-5 years of Pulmonary Function Testing experience in a high volume PFT Lab
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
1. Currently licensed in respiratory care by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Division of Professional Licensure.
2. Current registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) – Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential effective January 2017 for new hires. All employees are expected to comply with the NBRC’s Continuing Competency program and are required to provide evidence that they are continuing to meet current standards of practice and have successfully renewed their national credentials issued by the NBRC New graduates have 6 months from the day of hire to obtain the RRT credential.
3. Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support or equivalent.
