POSITION SUMMARY:

The Program Manager - Medication Safety and Compliance, a specialized role designed for an experienced Pharmacy Technician, will oversee the daily operations of medication safety and compliance activities within the Boston Medical Center's Pharmacy Department. This position plays a critical role in supporting the department's goals of maintaining the highest standards of medication management, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and promoting safe medication practices. The Program Manager will work closely with pharmacists, other pharmacy technicians, and healthcare providers under the direction of the Associate Director for Medication Safety and Regulatory Compliance.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Works collaboratively with the Associate Director for Medication Safety and Regulatory Compliance to create and manage a seamless system of Medication Management Regulatory Compliance and Medication Safety at Boston Medical Center.   


1.    Medication Safety Initiatives

  • Collaborate in the investigation of medication-related incidents and contribute to the development of improvement strategies.
  • Conduct regular assessments and audits to identify potential safety concerns or risks in medication processes.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and contribute to the development of action plans to mitigate identified risks.
  • Assists with coding medication incidents
  • Assist in preparation of reporting out medication safety slides

2.    Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to institutional, state and federal regulations.
  • Trains clinicians on matters of medication management, including storage, handling, and administration pertinent to established hospital and regulatory agency requirements 
  • Performs quarterly compliance rounds of all areas under the purview of Boston Medical Center inpatients pharmacy (satellite pharmacies, IV Rooms and segregated compounding areas), outpatient pharmacy, ambulatory clinics (medication rooms) and Community Health Centers.
  • Develop action plans derived from compliance rounds and facilitate communication between site leadership, management teams, and external departments or vendors, as required for seamless compliance.
  • Maintain and update The Joint Commission (TJC) binder on a quarterly basis to ensure policies and references remain current and aligned with regulatory standards.

3.    Sterile Compounding

  • Display expertise in sterile compounding encompassing hazardous, investigational, adult, and pediatric sterile products.
  • Maintain and update gloved fingertip and media fill testing procedures as necessary.
  • Conduct sterile compounding media fill and glove fingertip testing in adherence to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards/guidelines for all relevant staff.
  • Ensure compliance of all staff engaged in sterile compounding with competency assessments as outlined by BMC policy.
  • Monitor and manage testing results of all personnel involved in sterile compounding while coordinating testing schedules.
  • Participate in the incubation and evaluation of media samples.
  •  Execute routine testing of sterile compounding samples and prepare slides accordingly.
  • Supervise the procurement of testing supplies essential for sterile compounding.

4.    Quality Assurance/Process Improvement

  •  Support quality assurance programs and initiatives aimed at improving the medication management process
  •  Assist in monitoring medication storage, handling, and disposal procedures to guarantee compliance with quality standards.
  • Works with Associate director for medication safety and regulatory compliance and medication safety officer to ensure timely and accurate data collection and to maintaining databases, and analyzing database information
  • Contribute to initiatives focused on improving the medication management process.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, to ensure that exceptional customer service and patient care may be provided.
  • Utilizes hospital’s behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
  • Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as needed

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the MA Board of Pharmacy. 
Must also have national certification (CPT) from Pharmacy Tech Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam of Certified Pharmacy Techs (exCPT)

EXPERIENCE:
Must have a minimum of five years of pharmacy technician experience with sterile compounding experience

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to provide leadership and coordinate the work of a team of assigned team members. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to be detailed oriented in all notes and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in areas such as grant management, training, team building, program development/management, problem solving, and community building. 
  • Ability to analyze needs and apply resources effectively to meet those needs. 
  • Ability to achieve targeted results through motivating, mobilizing, and delegating to others. 
  • Experience with Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet and web page usage/updating, social networking and other technologies that can be used to further carry the program’s mission.
  • Demonstrated skills in the provision of services in a multicultural environment.
