The Nurse Manager is a management/leadership position in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Department and operationalizes the core values of the Organization by promoting patient and family centered care. 
• The Nurse Manager has responsibility/accountability for the unit's operations and initiates ongoing evaluation.
• Patient care outcomes are the result of interdisciplinary collaboration coordinated by the Nurse Manager.
• The Nurse Manager who works collaboratively with the Director of Maternal Child Health in planning and implementing patient care at the service/department level
• The Nurse Manager is accountable for cost efficiency

This position is responsible for providing supervision, clinical expertise, mentoring, and role modeling to members of the nursing team while optimizing available resources to achieve optimal patient care outcomes.
• This role may include, but is not limited to, supervision and appraisal of staff performance, evaluation of patient care interventions and outcomes, coordination of workflow activities, competency development and validation of neonatal related skill requirements, participation in unit-based and hospital committees and organization of quality/performance improvement activities.

Key Responsibilities

The Nurse Manager has twenty four hour responsibility/accountability for the units' operations. Patient care outcomes are the result of interdisciplinary collaboration coordinated by the Director of Maternal Child Health.
• Uses advanced knowledge and understanding for specialty service in collaboration with the Director of Maternal Child Health and the NICU Clinical Nurse Educator in strategic planning for the operational needs of the NICU.
• The Nurse Manager is accountable for cost effective decision making regarding daily assignment of staff, use of supplies, capital expenditures, and par supply levels.
• The Nurse Manager is responsible for day to day operational decision making.
• Acts as an expert clinical resource to the nursing staff in the varying aspects of neonatal care including the care management of the acutely ill neonates by incorporating the following elements:  critical thinking skills, evidence-based and best practice modalities in patient care and the integration of current standard of care.
• Supervises and evaluates the care provided to patients within service specialty through audit processes and observation.
• Conducts annual performance evaluations.
• Monitors and analyzes trends involving NICU census, staff resources and changes in patient acuity and recommends budgets for NICU (manpower and non-wage).
• Based on analysis, develops variance reports, corrective action plans and data needed to project for future budgetary needs.

Develops business plans for new clinical programs.
• Serves on committees, task forces, and work groups on a voluntary and appointed basis at the department and Medical Center-wide levels, participating actively and completing follow-up activities in a consistent manner.
• Conducts daily rounds on all NICU inpatients and communicates findings with Neonatologist and staff.
• Participates in JCAHO and regulatory agencies' accreditation processes and addresses safety and legal requirements established with emphasis on those pertinent to the NICU and the Division of Maternal Child Health.
• Promotes collaborative relationships between the nursing staff members of labor and delivery and the mother baby unit.
• Promotes a model of shared governance.
• Develops a rapport with all other department managers, administrative personnel and physician's to promote the concept of a team approach to the Medical Center's goals.
• Collaborates with the other Steward Healthcare Members belonging to Maternal Child Health
• Demonstrates an overall accountability to recruit, interview, select and evaluate department personnel.
• Promotes a supportive working environment within the Medical Center.
• Utilizes procedures as defined by the Nursing Division, Human Resources, and related departments to provide counseling, disciplinary action plans and/or termination as necessary.
• Creates a climate which assists staff in identifying individual strengths and areas of learning.
• Demonstrates awareness of self-learning needs and seeks ways to meet these in order to maintain current competency and respond to new clinical and management demands.
• Provides clinical support for the Division of Neonatology in collaboration with Chair of Pediatrics and the Medical Director, Neonatal ICU.
• Monitor inpatient care and communicate with referring physicians and hospitals the condition of patients referred to the NICU and retro transfers.
• Works with Chair of Pediatrics, Medical Director, and Neonatology attending physicians to identify clinical care delivery and quality metrics.
• Promotes a climate of clinical and professional excellence.
• Perform all other duties as requested.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

BSN Required, MSN Preferred
• Five plus years in NICU with demonstrated leadership ability
• Membership in professional organizations is recommended and certification in specialty areas is encouraged
• Demonstrates, professional demeanor
• Ability to work independently and take initiative
• Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems to meet desired outcomes
• Able to communicate effectively 
• Manual dexterity to perform job function
• Shall be accountable for maintaining patient confidentiality and security for all medical center-related, medical staff-related, and patient-related data and information
• Interpersonal skills sufficient to work in close proximity to physicians, surgical technicians and patients
• Ability to take directions from others

Education/Experience:

Education:  BSN required, MSN preferred in clinical specialty
Experience: Current clinical (minimum 5 years) experience in a level 3 NICU.
Certification/Licensure: Massachusetts Registered Nurse, BLS
Software/Hardware: Basic computer skills required, Meditech knowledge preferred
other: NRP required, S.T.AB.L.E.  preferred
