I. Position Function:

  • Under the direction of a nuclear medicine physician, performs imaging utilizing diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs radio-pharmacy procedures, quality control procedures, and daily monitoring procedures under the nuclear medicine physician according to NRC guidelines.

II. Job Relationships:

  • Supervised and/or reportable to the Nuclear Medicine supervisor.
  • Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with physicians, other health care professionals, and patients.

III. Authority:

To decided if a test is correctly ordered, to provide the additional views for a quality study. Reportable top the NRC and JCAHO.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • 1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."
  • Injection of patients with radio-pharmaceuticals. Checking paperwork to insure the test is ordered correctly.
  • Radio-pharmacy - prepare kits and draw up doses, quality control according to NRC rules and regulations.
  • Quality Control of gamma cameras. Daily, weekly, spect Q>C> and assist in quality assurance studies.
  • Patient imaging - all studies, spect, cardiac, brain, portable and on-call emergency studies. Correct views done.
  • Correct films taken - labeled properly. Paperwork is in order for the physician to read.
  • Patient scheduling - to insure proper test is ordered with applicable diagnosis - in a timely fashion. GOOD PHONE SKILLS.
  • Proper techniques for moving patients. Patient care, bedpans, emesis basins.
  • Perform bone density studies.
  • Assist physician with patient therapy. Also 131I total body drinks. Quality Management Program.
  • Ordering and receiving shipments of radioactivity - packing generator.
  • Aware of NRC rules and regulations.
  • Clean-up at the end of the day, monitoring 2 books, patient room if necessary, radio-pharmacy books.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

  • Ordering supplies - gloves, syringes, etc.
  • Clean work areas, laundry supplies.
  • Rotate shifts - (7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, 8:30 PM - 5:00 AM, etc.).
  • Take call.
  • Packing generator per DOT requirements.

V. Reporting Requirements:

  • Reports immediately to supervisor of any deviation of normal operations.
  • Reports immediately to supervisor of any unusual occurrences related to patients and machines during imaging.
  • Reports all incidents.
  • Reports all spills or misadministrations to supervisor.

VI. Accountability:

  • Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff-related, and patient-related data and information.
  • Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures.
  • Shall be accountable correct calculations in radio-pharmacy and in calculating patient results.
  • Shall be accountable for proper patient identification by asking the patient's name and checking ID bracelet.
  • Shall be accountable for observing all policies and procedures of the department.
  • Shall be accountable for observing all NRC rules and regulations.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

  • 2 year degree

Minimum Experience:

  • Nuclear medicine school internship

Minimum skills/abilities:

  • Successful completion of Nuclear Medicine School internship.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Massachusetts State License
  • National Registry ARRT or CNMT

Training:

  • Nuclear medicine internship
