Position: Pharmacy Technician III
Department: Inpatient Pharmacy
Schedule: Per Diem, M-S morning and evening rotating.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Technician III is responsible for providing high quality patient focused pharmacy services.  Will also provide training and oversight for pharmacy Technicians I & II.

The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician III – role is responsible for the completion of assigned pharmacy workflow tasks with clearly defined goals for performance to ensure the operational flow of services provided are executed in a safe and efficient manner.  This role supports pharmacy services provided to patients and providers which shall include prescription processing, patient/provider outreach, addressing incoming pharmacy calls, other tasks as assigned, and will regularly provide updates on productivity and task completion. This position will work under the supervision of pharmacists and the pharmacy technician supervisor remotely to ensure delivery of high-quality patient focused pharmacy services.

This position operates at the highest outpatient technician competency level working with a high degree of autotomy while also being a part of a collaborative, yet virtual, team supporting the needs of the pharmacy. This position requires exceptional communication, coupled with the utmost in organization and efficiency acumen, with strong skills in multiple pharmacy competency areas, including outstanding customer service, in order to maximize patient safety and experience.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

 Prescription transcription, adjudication, and error resolution processing steps

  • Accurately transcribes and enters electronic prescriptions into the pharmacy management software.
  • Completes patient and provider requests from the voicemail queue as appropriate.
  • Completes scheduled refills of patient’s medications as required.
  • Confirms patients’ demographic information as necessary for mail order prescriptions.
  • Resolves prescription refill errors in the pharmacy management software as appropriate.
  • Transfers prescriptions as requested by patients or other pharmacies.
  • Resolves third party insurance claim issues.
  • Forwards issues to a pharmacist on duty as appropriate.

Patient/provider outreach communication support

  • Conducts medication compliance calls to patients.
  • Contacts providers as needed for patient refills, prior authorizations, etc.
  • Adheres to all HIPAA requirements while contacting patients, providers, and other pharmacy staff members.
  • Adheres to all policies related to AIDET in providing service to patients, providers, and other pharmacy staff members.

Phone center management

  • Answers inbound call from patients, providers, and other pharmacy staff members.
  • Triages calls as necessary, working to resolve any outstanding prescription issues for those calling the pharmacy.
  • Escalates calls to pharmacists, management, and other pharmacy staff members as necessary.
  • Applies excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills to all interactions.
     

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

             

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Massachusetts Registered Pharmacy Technician required.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required with ExCPT or PTCB.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 4 years progressively responsible experience in a pharmacy setting.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Work requires effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with hospital staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, colleagues, and others.
  • Ability to speak the English language, read, interpret, and follow complicated verbal and written instruction with precision, accuracy and dependability.
  • Additional language skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is very helpful.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize essential tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong math skills required; ability to perform work accurately and pay attention to details, including being able to perform general mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios & proportions).
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information. Knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Comprehension of pharmacy law and Board regulations
  • Must maintain the required level of competency to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
