JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Medical Dosimetrist designs comprehensive, highly complex radiation treatment plans for patients undergoing radiation therapy, serving as a critical member of the radiation oncology clinical team. Operating under the general supervision of the Chief of Physics, this role executes clinical duties in strict compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) regulations. Beyond individual patient assignments, this position exerts a departmental impact by distributing work assignments among the dosimetry team, driving the strategic optimization and restructuring of dosimetry workflows, and delivering daily clinical training and mentorship to lower-level staff, residents, and students.

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Advanced Treatment Planning: Designs, generates, and documents complex computerized and manual radiation treatment plans (including 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, SRS/SBRT, and Brachytherapy) to deliver prescribed radiation doses to defined tumor volumes while minimizing exposure to normal, dose-limiting critical structures.

Workflow Coordination & Distribution: Manages the operational distribution of clinical work assignments among dosimetry team members and leads initiatives aimed at evaluating and restructuring internal dosimetry processes and procedures.

Anatomical Structure Contouring & Fusion: Identifies, isolates, and contours normal and critical anatomical structures across multiple modalities—including CT, MRI, PET, and ultrasound—and executes rigid or deformable image fusions to ensure precise target localization.

Clinical Training & Mentorship: Conducts daily hands-on clinical training, technical onboarding, and competency assessments for medical dosimetry students, residents, lower-level staff, and visiting physicians on complex planning methodologies.

Dose Computations & Plan Verification: Performs and verifies the mathematical accuracy of monitor unit and timer setting dose calculations utilizing manual software systems, ensuring complete data integrity within the electronic patient record prior to physicist review.

Simulation & Immobilization Collaboration: Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated imaging equipment, and consults directly with therapists, physicists, and physicians to design optimal patient positioning and custom immobilization devices (e.g., molds, casts, compensation filters).

Quality Assurance & Protocol Compliance: Executes routine quality assurance checks on patient treatment plans to guarantee approved delivery parameters, and manages the exhaustive documentation, data collection, and submission requirements for patients enrolled in clinical trials and research protocols.

Billing, Coding, & Documentation Integrity: Audits and executes accurate technical documentation required for billing, coding, and regulatory reimbursement compliance relative to the submitted procedure codes.
