Position Title: 

Medical Director of Medical Consultative Services

at Brockton Behavioral Health Center (BBHC)

 

The Medical Director of Medical Consultative Services at Brockton Behavioral Health Center (BBHC) is a clinical leader responsible for providing comprehensive medical oversight and consultation across BBHC’s Inpatient Psychiatry and Addiction Treatment Services (ATS/CSS). This role is critical in integrating medical and psychiatric care, ensuring patient safety, and optimizing quality outcomes for individuals with complex behavioral and medical needs.

 

The Medical Director provides direct supervision to medical Advanced Practice Providers, guides medical policy development, and serves as a key clinical liaison between internal teams and external medical partners. The position combines clinical consultation, medical education, protocol development, and administrative responsibilities in support of BBHC’s commitment to excellence in behavioral health and addiction care.

 

Medical Oversight & Clinical Consultation

 

·       Provide expert medical consultation for patients across inpatient psychiatric and addiction treatment programs, especially in cases of acute or chronic medical complexity.

·       Serve as the attending-level consultant to psychiatry teams, nursing staff, and advanced practice providers in real time for urgent medical decision-making.

·       Participate in the on-call rotation to support weekend coverage and urgent medical NP questions, ensuring continuity of care 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

 

Inpatient Psychiatry Consultation Responsibilities

 

·       Supervise and support Medical Nurse Practitioners (NPs) who perform medical intakes and ongoing care for patients with chronic or acute medical conditions.

·       Hold regular supervision meetings and provide daily availability for clinical consultation and support.

·       Lead and deliver training on advanced medical topics relevant to psychiatric inpatients (e.g., HIV management, end-stage liver disease, diabetes).

·       Collaborate with the Medical Director – Psychiatry and the Medical Director – Addictions Services to develop and maintain protocols for:

·       Admission criteria and medical clearance

·       Emergency Department referral guidelines

·       Seizure management and other medical risk protocols

 

Administrative Management of Advanced Practice Providers

 

·       Oversee administrative functions for medical NPs across programs, including:

·       Schedule creation and management

·       Coverage of absences and planned time off

·       Ensuring accurate payroll, leave balances, and compliance with HR policies

·       Coordinating required onboarding, annual training, and continuing education

 

Quality Improvement & Strategic Leadership

 

·       Co-lead development and implementation of evidence-based protocols and guidelines for medical care across BBHC programs.

·       Lead and/or participate in committees aimed at improving operational and clinical excellence.

·       Contribute to organizational quality improvement initiatives, including adverse event reviews, audits, and compliance readiness.

·       Collaborate with leadership to identify opportunities for enhanced integration of physical and behavioral health care models.

·       Represent BBHC in key clinical and administrative meetings and with regulatory agencies when appropriate.

 

Additional Organizational Responsibilities

There may be additional responsibilities as assigned to include inpatient hospital, primary care, or addiction medicine role(s) at the BMC main campus, depending on available opportunities; there is also flexibility to explore other opportunities (such as research or teaching roles) based on the candidate’s interests and the institution’s needs.

 

Required Education and Experience

·       Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.

·       At least 2 years of post-training general medicine experience, with proficiency in care of co-morbid behavioral health and medical conditions

·       At least 1 year of experience with clinical leadership, such as experience in leading quality improvement, clinical program development, or educational leadership, including personnel management

 

Preferred Education and Experience

·       Residency training in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine

·       Previous experience leading interdisciplinary teams within a behavioral health system or inpatient treatment center.

 

Certifications, Licenses Required

·       Current and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

·       Board certification in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.

·       DEA license

 

Certifications, Licenses Preferred

·       Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

·       DEA license with eligibility to prescribe medications for opioid use disorder (e.g., buprenorphine).

·        

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·       Strong ability to triage, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions commonly co-occurring with behavioral health and substance use disorders, including HIV, hepatitis, liver disease, metabolic disorders, and seizure disorders.

·       Proficiency in basic addiction medicine, including withdrawal management and treatment of opioid use disorder, benzodiazepine use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and stimulant use disorder.

·       Demonstrated excellence in personnel management and enthusiasm for teaching and supervising Nurse Practitioners and trainees in a supportive, growth-oriented environment.

·       Motivated and energized by quality improvement and program development, with a drive to continuously enhance care delivery and meet the evolving needs of patients and staff.

·       Creative and organized problem-solver who can work closely with operations partners to provide clinical leadership for discrete initiatives, pilots, and workflow changes.

·       Organized administrator who can manage staff schedules to align with clinical program needs, and work with Human Resources on staff development, growth, recruitment and retention

·       Comfort and effectiveness in matrixed and multidisciplinary teams, with the ability to partner with medical, psychiatric, nursing, administrative, and external stakeholders.

·       Strong orientation toward outcomes and performance, with the ability to use data and feedback to inform decisions and drive clinical excellence.

·       Deep understanding of integrated care models and ability to support the seamless coordination of physical and behavioral health services.

·       Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

·       Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and in leveraging data for clinical decision-making, quality monitoring, and regulatory compliance.
