As a member of the dynamic Foundation Relations and Corporate Partnership teams, the Foundation Relations Officer will primarily manage their own foundations portfolio that supports institutional priorities among various clinical initiatives, programs, research, and education at Boston Medical Center (BMC). This position will help drive projects that propel the foundation relations strategy and revenue with a focus on relationship management, cultivation, solicitation of foundation gifts, proposal writing, and donor stewardship.

This candidate will synthesize complex information from principal investigators and program leaders to solicit grants in support of various clinical initiatives, equity-driven and education programs, training, and patient-centered research at BMC. They must be a strategic thinker with strong political sensitivities and sound judgment; an outstanding writer; a skilled project manager able to inspire multiple people to work towards the submission of high-quality, competitive grant proposals; and an expert in the intricacies of the foundation grant cycle. 

Knowledge of research and evaluation methods and budgeting principles is beneficial along with the necessary background and experience in order to assess proposals for innovation and impact; advise investigators/program leaders concerning proposal content, funder priorities, and guidelines; and strengthen proposal contents.

A successful candidate will perform well under deadlines; broker new internal and external collaborations and partnerships; cultivate new six and seven-figure funding opportunities; and be a team player in the Development office and across campus.

POSITION SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Responsible for generating new opportunities for BMC and capturing several million dollars of grant support for BMC annually.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Foundation Relations, assist and/or lead the preparation of foundation grant proposals, including writing letters of inquiry, concept papers, and proposals.
  • Research and identify new potential foundation funders and solicit support for new and ongoing clinical initiatives, education programs and research.
  • Develop budgets and budget justifications; prepare collateral materials; and ensure compliance with award requirements.
  • Maintain a growing portfolio of current foundation donors and prospects, fostering these relationships through regular communication and stewardship.
  • Strategize with principal investigators and project manager, as appropriate, about proposal design.
  • Work with stakeholders across the institution to obtain materials and information necessary to prepare proposals and reports (e.g., job descriptions, salary requirements, and project descriptions).
  • Coordinate with BMC Grants Administration staff to ensure compliance with research grants.
  • Track all cycles of the funding cycle in NXT and execute on all actions.
  • Assist in the development of department, unit, and personal goals and annual strategic planning processes.
  • Analyze and assesses draft proposals and attachments in relation to evaluation criteria and recommend strategies for strengthening proposals.
  • Edit and proofread proposals and attachments prior to submission.
  • Draft foundation correspondence with funders (e.g., acknowledgement letters).
  • Participate in annual planning process and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with other initiatives of the hospital as needed, including service in support of major BMC events organized by the Development Office (e.g., Gala).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

EXPERIENCE:

6-8 years of related experience. Health care, public health, social service, or research setting a plus.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Detail oriented and able to perform well under deadline while managing multiple tasks/projects effectively and efficiently.
  • Curiosity and continuous improvement mindset coupled with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and flexibility.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including management and other departments.

  • Desire to learn and implement knowledge across assigned tasks and workflow.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access, Outlook; knowledge of Blackbaud or other funder management platforms.
