Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, Acute Care & Ambulatory Pharmacy, the Director leads the Pharmacy to ensure high-quality patient care through facilitation of institutional and system level goals and objectives. This includes but is not limited to oversight of clinical, regulatory and operations processes to ensure safe and effective medication and nutritional management. Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and administrative teams across the institutional and system.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Job Description

  • Oversee all aspects of Department of Pharmacy including but not limited to planning, budgeting, fiscal reporting, goal setting with measurement, operational processes, clinical services, research, regulatory compliance and policy development.
  • Ensures the Department of Pharmacy operates in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and standard-setting organizations; and within the approved operating and capital budgets
  • Continually innovates Department of Pharmacy through service line enhancements and provider collaboration.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, promotion, demotion, termination, performance management, and professional development of staff members.
  • Oversees strategic planning for all departments in conjunction with institutional and system-level strategic plan.
  • Establishes and maintains fiscal control of the departments, including purchasing and inventory control.
  • Serves as Controlled Substances Registrant for Boston Medical Center – Brighton and controlled substance subject matter expert for other departments.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations including but not limited to: Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy, USP Chapters, Joint Commission, FDA, DEA, HRSA and others as needed.
  • Determines the allocation of department's annual operating budget within the hospital's annual guidelines.
  • Reviews and approves contracts related to Pharmacy Services (contracted work, automation, service changes, etc.) as identified by institution and system-level administration.
  • Serves as liaison between departments and outside associations relating to hospital pharmacy as needed.
  • Ensures development and ongoing quality improvement plan.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary committees local and system levels. Voting member of local and system Pharmacy & Therapeutics committees.
  • Interacts with various members of the medical staff, including service chiefs, to ensure appropriate and cost-effective medication management.
  • Reviews all policies within the hospital related to the dispensing, administration, and record keeping for all medications.
  • Evaluates and recommends medications for addition or deletion from the hospital formulary.
  • Prepares statistical and analytical reports as required by regulation.
  • Ensures oversight of pharmacy post graduate programs and pharmacy student activities.
  • Votes on behalf of Boston Medical Center - Brighton on appropriate health system level committees.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • MS and a PharmD or Ph.D); and 

  • A minimum of five years of supervisory experience within a Pharmacy Department; and  

  • 2-3 years of experience as an Assistant Director in a Pharmacy Department at an organization with a Residency program up to PGY2 in Pharmacy Administration. 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • MS/MBA/MHA/MPH or equivalent 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: 

  • Current License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs): 

  • Strong communication and educator skills. 

  • Strong orientation to patient care in accordance with the mission of the medical center & organizational values. 

  • Ability to effectively manage the department budgets. 

  • Ability to develop and implement inventory control system. 

  • Ability to make formal presentations related to clinical, operational, educational, research, and financial issues. 

  • Well-informed of national trends and perspectives regarding medications which may impact patient care, hospital, or on the departmental operation. 

Compensation Range:

$136,000.00- $197,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
