POSITION SUMMARY:

Boston Medical Center Specialty Pharmacy Program is one of the largest and most clinically advanced specialty pharmacy programs. The Director of Pharmacy for Specialty has oversight of pharmacy services embedded within outpatient clinics. As the pharmacy leader in this area, this position has the responsibility of overseeing both the clinical and operational models related to pharmacy functions. The primary responsibility of the clinical model is to support patients, prescribers, nurses and other HCPs by delivering pharmacy clinical excellence, including but not limited to direct patient care education, interventions and pharmacy research. Our clinical program model includes overseeing all ambulatory clinical pharmacy specialists within our specialty clinics. Operationally, this role will have oversight of all pharmacy liaisons embedded within our clinics and is responsible for operations related to drug access, both medical and pharmacy benefit drugs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

The Director  Specialty Pharmacy Operation’s  responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Accountable for the success of Pharmacy Operations and Pharmacy profitability of specialty pharmacy and other ambulatory high cost drugs.

Ensures systems and people are aligned to identify and capture all possible specialty pharmacy opportunities available.

Responsible for referral processes and ensuring optimal internal pharmacy capture is met.

Ensures patients and health plan members are served at the highest level, creating and experience that is remarkable and memorable for those we care for and putting the patient at the center of our focus.

Ensure patients and members get the medication they need regardless of their ability to pay. A guiding principle is that no person goes without medication they need for financial reasons.

Ensure our provider and clinic partners receive the highest service from our staff and that the specialty pharmacy staff are seen as an integral part of every care team they serve with (remotely or locally).

Additional responsibilities:

  • Assists with software system updates and enhancement, including protocol development and maintenance
  • Identify opportunities for growth and leads analytics team
  • Identifies and reports key performance metrics, and uses these to produce dashboards on a regular basis
  • Works with Health Plan and ACO teams to develop and execute clinical programs that improve quality, lower costs or both
  • Regularly raises the bar on patient experience that will create more personalized, seamless, and supportive experiences for our patients that ensures highly reliable retention of patients enrolled in our program
  • Robust oversight of liaison program to create a supportive and engaging experience for all members of the specialty pharmacy team
  • Utilizing specialty pharmacy resources from time to time the director will  collaborate with the population health teams, to  help assist with challenging clinically and socially-focused system level quality improvement projects

Maintains a high level understanding of and leadership in general operations, including knowledge and operation of technologies, upkeep of equipment and management of the staff serving hematology-oncology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, endocrine, dermatology and transplant services from Moakley infusion center and specialty pharmacy.

Shares on-call responsibilities with other pharmacy leadership staff

Assists with compliance of limited distribution drugs and specialty pharmacy network contracts

Identify and collaborate with pharmaceutical companies

Works closely with data analytics team in extracting data for comprehensive analysis for needs of specialty pharmacy

Manages projects including the creation of ideas, identification of key stakeholders, developing and executing the project, presenting to large groups and Vice President, Officer and Board level stakeholders at the organization and timely completion

Responsible for budgeting for specialty, with a focus on the forecasting or identification of needs for future and current needs

Responsible for the management of productivity, including developing a knowledge of metrics, monitoring at defined interval performance and demonstrating an a ability to adjust to meet productive standards through flexing staff, oversight and adjustment of schedules, and proactive flexible position control (e.g. reducing core FTEs through attrition or layoffs, replacing full FTEs with part time and per diems, managing a per diem pool etc.)

Develops and maintains partnerships across other departments in the organization by early engagement of other stakeholders in problem solving, negotiating and influencing buy-in from others prior to implementation, self-identifying and volunteering for interdepartmental projects, interdisciplinary teams, and generally representing the department outside of the department.

Responsible for communication within the department to ensure information is shared for effective operations. Communicates organizational mission, goals, and values to employees.  Confers with staff to explain program and individual responsibilities.

Assist with scoping, building and maintaining new lines of specialty growth strategic initiatives across the system.

Prepares and presents information at relevant meetings as required to relate the performance on pharmacy measurable key performance metrics.


Participates in departmental and organizational committees as assigned.
 

Seeks out, understands, listens and conveys clearly, information as needed in written and verbal forms.

Investigates and responds appropriately to all complaints and takes effective corrective action when necessary.

Demonstrates ability to identify and resolve interpersonal or professional conflicts when dealing with members of the organization.

Consistently demonstrates tact, courtesy and positive attitude in communication and interaction with other employees, third party payer representatives, physicians and patients.  At all times presents the department and the hospital in a position positive manner.

Utilizes hospital’s behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.

Within the scope of the department and organization and relevant to department and professional standards, other duties and responsibilities as requested by the associate CPO, VP or other leadership.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy and completion of an accredited residency program in hospital pharmacy. Advanced degree (e.g. PharmD, M.S. or MBA) preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Requires licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Massachusetts by the hire date.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Work requires at least 5 years of progressively advanced pharmacy management experience.
  • Prior management and QS1 systems experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Proven ability to translate a strategic plan into operational policy.
  • Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor a multi-layered staff; ability to lead change, ability to lead change, manage people, engage across departments and across the organization.
  • Demonstrated track record of management of personnel and fiscal resources
  • Capable of program development, implementation and evaluation
  • Capable of long range program planning that involves complex decision making tasks.
  • High degree of analytical ability in mathematics and scientific and management principals necessary to develop, review, and modify procedures and programs.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Must be exceptionally organized to manage multiple priorities and diverse activities, to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Dedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organization
  • Ability to anticipate objections and plan appropriate responses; ability to perform and lead effectively in stressful situations and to solve problems as they occur
  • Professional in conduct and appearance
  • Proficient with standard software used in healthcare office setting (i.e. MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc.). Experience with pharmacy systems (such as QS1) is a plus.
