Position Title:  Director of Hospital Medicine

Boston Medical Center Boston Medical Center (BMC) and the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine (BUCASM) are seeking an outstanding clinician, leader, educator, and innovator to serve as the Director of Hospital Medicine, a unit within the Section of General Internal Medicine (GIM). The Director of Hospital Medicine will be a faculty member at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Location:  Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA

The Director of Hospital Medicine is responsible for leading innovative program development and managing clinical operations for the Hospital Medicine Unit at Boston Medical Center, reporting jointly to the Chief of GIM and the Chief Medical Officer of BMC. The Hospital Medicine Unit provides care to a large proportion of the general inpatient medicine population at Boston Medical Center and is critical to the organization’s overall performance and success.

Key characteristics of the Unit include 38 faculty physicians, 12 advanced practice providers, 6 inpatient hospital medicine services, collaborative care for patients in the Observation Unit and the ED Boarding program, integration into multiple resident teaching services, and attending on the procedure team. The Director will need to collaborate effectively with leaders across the hospital system to achieve program goals that are well-aligned with system goals, prioritizing high-quality evidence-based patient-centered care, patient safety, and clinical care that is efficient and timely. The Director will provide mentorship for academic and career growth for faculty and create a supportive team culture through excellent communication. The Director will also help support and develop new strategic initiatives to help the hospital system adapt to a changing healthcare environment

The Director will receive 30% salary support for this position. Research experience in implementation science or health equity is desirable.

Key responsibilities:

• Oversee the performance of the Hospital Medicine Unit, including physicians and advanced practice providers

• Provide direct clinical care to patients on the hospital medicine service

• Ensure high-quality evidence-based patient care on the Hospital Medicine Unit in multiple domains, including patient safety, efficiency, equity, and patient centered care

• Work to align the goals of the Hospital Medicine Unit with the priorities of the Department of Medicine and Boston Medical Center

• Develop innovative training and research opportunities for faculty members within the Unit

• Collaborate with Bed Control, Nursing, Admitting, other clinical services, the Emergency Department, the Associate Chief Medical Officer, and the Chief Medical Officer to optimize patient flow and quality of clinical care on the Hospital Medicine Unit

• Work closely with Nursing and Case Management leadership to coordinate high quality and timely patient care • Ensure clinical coverage of all the non-teaching, direct care hospitalist services

• Recruit additional hospital medicine clinicians to maintain staffing of all necessary clinical services

• Provide feedback and mentorship to individual clinicians in the Hospital Medicine Unit

• Support the career development of faculty in the Hospital Medicine Unit

• Identify clinical quality improvement opportunities

• Ensure appropriate billing for clinical services and assist in tracking revenue cycle and budgetary performance of the Hospital Medicine Unit, working closely with administrative leadership in General Internal Medicine and Boston Medical Center

• Respond to problems with patient flow in a timely and effective manner

• Collaborate with the ED to optimize the performance of the Observation Unit and the care of patients who are boarding in the ED, improving patient care and flow

• Work with Boston Medical Center leadership to help the hospital achieve its target performance metrics for the Hospital Medicine Unit, including Mortality, LOS, Readmission Rate, Patient Experience, and Discharge Time

• Collaborate with Boston Medical Center leadership on new initiatives that may be needed to help BMC optimize clinical care, patient flow, quality, safety, and equity

• Work closely with the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and other Inpatient Medical Directors to optimize patient care on other inpatient medical services

• Support educational needs of the Internal Medicine residency program and the Boston University School of Medicine Key qualifications:

• Board Certified in Internal Medicine

• Prior leadership experience in an academic inpatient setting desired

• At least 5 years of prior clinical experience as a hospitalist • Excellent organizational and communication skills

• Full MA medical license will be required
