This job leads and manages a comprehensive facilities management operation that supports the hospital's strategic and operational objectives. The role is responsible for the oversight and coordination of all facilities-related functions, including engineering services, building maintenance and repair, technical renovations, and utilities generation and distribution. The position ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of facility systems that are critical to hospital operations. The incumbent operates under general direction and exercises broad discretion in planning, prioritizing, and executing work, while supervising a diverse team of technical and operational staff.

  • Develop and manage the capital budget program for campus maintenance, including preparing annual budgets, tracking expenditures, and ensuring efficient use of resources. Collaborates with leadership to align the budget with departmental priorities and capital improvement needs.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and maintenance of policies and procedures for facilities and utilities systems management to ensure operational efficiency, compliance, and safety standards are met. Regularly reviews and updates processes to align with best practices.
  • Lead and represent the Facilities Management department in meetings with hospital leadership and external agencies to advocate for facilities needs, discuss planning initiatives, and address regulatory requirements. Provides strategic input on facilities planning and development.
  • Direct and coordinate all aspects of maintenance and repair operations for hospital facilities, ensuring preventive maintenance programs, emergency repairs, and major projects are completed on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to hospital operations. Utilizes a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track work orders and maintenance schedules.
  • Manage facilities-related capital projects such as renovations and improvements, working closely with the Construction and Design division. Oversees all phases from project initiation to completion, ensuring adherence to quality, budget, and timeline goals.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance and quality of facilities services through regular inspections, performance metrics, and feedback from staff and hospital departments.
  • Manage the department’s resources, including personnel and equipment, to ensure optimal staffing levels and resource allocation based on workload demands and budget constraints.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as Joint Commission requirements and environmental regulations, maintaining documentation and ensuring facilities operations adhere to all legal and accreditation standards.
  • Ensures facilities support is effectively integrated into broader hospital goals and operations.

  Job Requirements

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University with major studies in engineering, management or related fields; and a minimum of 7-10 years of accumulated facilities management experience in a small to mid-size medical facilities with responsibilities for comparable systems and progressive responsible management experience in utility plant & distribution system, building maintenance and/or construction ;or equivalent combination of education and experience

 At least 5 years experience in managing large organizations through intermediate supervisors.

Significant experience related to the development and management of budgets.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in engineering, management, or an appropriate, related discipline.

  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Experience interpreting personnel bargaining agreements.
  • Experience managing a research and development facility or health sciences campus
  • Continued Education Classes in operating and programming JCI Metasys system

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

Possess and maintain a current, valid Massachusetts driver's license and successfully complete a motor vehicle driving records check.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS PREFERRED

Registration as a professional engineer in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs)

  • Skills and experience with engineering or architectural design, maintenance management, budgeting expenditure development and tracking, and capital construction practices.
  • Familiarity and understanding of the building codes of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Joint Commission.
  • Strong business acumen
  • Extensive management skills and abilities in the field of utilities plant and system operations, facilities management and/or construction.
  • Capable of communicating with all levels of trades and management personnel. 
  • Ability to coordinate activities of multifaceted operation to provide effective support and services to a diverse constituency.
