POSITION SUMMARY:

Boston Medical Center Health System’s Director of Occupational Health provides direct oversight of the Occupational Health service. The Director engages collaboratively with the medical director, human resources, infectious disease, environmental health and safety, quality and patient safety and other departments and committees to foster relationships for the purpose of providing services in a coordinated manner across the health system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Secures and maintains appropriate staffing to ensure the service operates efficiently and provides excellent customer service.

  • Ensures that clinic operations remain within the designated budget and oversees implementing and overseeing budget initiatives.

  • In partnership with the medical director, provides daily leadership to and management of the clinical staff. This includes: recruiting and selecting clinicians with an appropriate skill set and knowledge base to provide occupational health services; overseeing the orientation and training of clinical staff, engaging with staff to provide feedback and coaching in a positive and proactive manner, and exemplifying the role of an occupational health professional.

  • Implements and oversees annual health requirements for BMCHS employees, licensed independent providers, residents, students, interns, vendors, volunteers, and on-site contracted personnel.

  • Provides direction on occupational health matters including the interpretation of regulations and standards, potential organizational exposure and liability, surveillance requirements, fitness for duty cases, job accommodations, and injury and exposure prevention.

  • Monitors outcomes related to workers compensation. This requires that the director fosters collaboration between Occupational Health and Absence Management, works effectively with claims and case managers, and develops and maintains an effective working relationship with Workers Compensation.

  • Develops, standardizes, updates and manages relevant OH operating procedures, policies and programs to improve the health and safety of BMCHS team members, ensuring alignment throughout the organization.

  • Oversees collection and communication of relevant team member health and safety data inclusive of OSHA reporting information for BMCHS in conjunction with Environmental Health and Safety.

  • Works closely with the Occupational Health Medical Director and the Chief Human Resources Officer to inform strategies for internal efficiencies and external growth, ensuring services are meeting the needs of the clients.

Must adhere to all BMCHS policies and standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related clinical license

  • A combination of education and experience may be substituted for requirements

EXPERIENCE:

  • Strongly prefer at least 5+ years of direct clinical experience, preferably in Occupational Health Nursing, and at least 5+ years of progressive healthcare leadership experience; which includes experience managing clinical staff.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN or COHN-S) and/or Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts (Preferred).

  • NIOSH spirometry certification (preferred).

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of OSHA, Joint Commission, CDC and MDPH standards and guidelines for healthcare settings (e.g., education and reporting requirements).

  • Ability to prepare and complete regulatory agency survey/audits.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams including staff at all levels of the organization of varying backgrounds

  • Strong problem solving and negotiation skills

  • Ability to effectively conduct meetings, both formal and informal

  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, synthesizing and presenting regular reports and measures of progress

  • Organizational skills required to oversee and track all budget, resource utilization, and staff deployment for all service initiatives. Also responsible for assisting with the identification and tracking of workers compensation cases and clinic visit volume.

  • Strength in implementation, execution and on time delivery of services and projects
