POSITION SUMMARY:

The Cooperation Education Program (Co-op) allows students to integrate classroom learning with paid work terms directly related to their field of study. In this position, you will receive work site training supervised by a manager or experienced worker. You will earn on-the-job and put your knowledge and skills to practice in a positive, professional manner, adhering to hospital policies, following safety rules and regulations and striving for a positive work experience. This position is at the South Bay Clinic.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Learns to and then practices patient treatment including basic therapeutic procedures, patient positioning, bed mobility, transfers, ambulation, gait training, and/or application of modalities such as ultrasound, hot/cold packs, whirlpool, etc.  Assists with exercise classes.
  • Documents patient progress in chart, maintains daily treatment statistics, and enters daily billing procedures for patients treated.
  • Keeps therapist informed of changes in patient’s reaction to treatments; assist therapist in determining an appropriate time of patient completion of exercise/treatment, based on physical and functional status. Communicates with nursing and medical staff on patient status.
  • Sets up and cleans patient areas and equipment. Maintains upkeep of treatment areas, sets up booth and cleans after treatment completion; cleans hot packs, paraffin, and whirlpools as policies indicate; maintains linen and supplies as needed and notifies supervisor of need to order more stock.
  • Adjusts, maintains, and keeps inventory of equipment and supplies assigned to area.
  • Attends in-services and staff meetings.
  • Performs other administrative duties as assigned including but not limited to photocopying, faxing, setting up and discharging charts, running various errands, etc.
  • Utilizes hospital’s RESPECT values and standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

High school or equivalent required. Position requires current enrollment in the Northeastern University Co-operative Education Program as a sophomore, junior or senior.

BLS for Healthcare Providers, certified by either American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

EXPERIENCE:

No work experience required

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) to deal with patients, families, therapists and various members of the healthcare team.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.
