American Sign Language Specialist Certif Per Diem Rotating D/E/N

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the ASL Coordinator, assist health care providers to communicate through signs made with the hands and other movements, including facial expressions, body language, and other visual cues to communicate through American Sign Language or Signed English in compliance with RID Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics and BMC policies to ensure patient safety and access to quality care.  May transmit messages simultaneously or consecutively.
Assist Deaf patients who use American Sign Language or Signed English to respond to requests for information from providers or to communicate their thoughts, emotions, and physical and/or emotional ailments or pain to their health care providers.  

May assist patient to complete medical forms in cases where patient is unable to or does not know how to read/write English.

May be called upon to work with a deaf-blind patient and provider without the Deaf Communication Access Specialist.  In such cases, may use sense of touch (tactile) or signs at a close visual range.
In specific cases where there is a specialized need on the part of a deaf patient who has minimal or limited communication skills, team with a Deaf Communication Access Specialist to transmit message content between the Deaf Communication Access Specialist and health care provider.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
 

Minimum of 2 years of college or certificates of studies in American Sign Language and Deaf studies or equivalent work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Must be screened by MCDHH and/or certified by National RID or NAD.

EXPERIENCE:

1 – 2 years’ experience working in healthcare settings.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Fluency in English (speaking, reading, writing) and American Sign Language and/or Signed English.
  • Able to communicate through tactile signing preferred but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of medical vocabulary.
  • Thorough knowledge of RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct and IMIA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics
  • Experience working with consumers from diverse socio-economic backgrounds
  • Able to operate and communicate via TTY communication devices, text pagers, email.
  • Able to communicate with deaf patients via video or TTY relay operators.
