POSITION SUMMARY:

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the operations and management of Boston University Medical Group (BUMG) General Accounting department. The department’s primary responsibilities are accurate and timely issuance of monthly and annual financial statements for BUMG and its consolidating entities and for preparing financial packages for reporting to various boards and committees. This position is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the completion of the annual fiscal year-end audit and production of year-end financial reports. The Accounting Manager oversees the General Accounting team comprised of an Accounting Supervisor, Senior and Staff Accountants. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, yearend audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. Follows established policies and procedures to maintain integrity of the general ledger and financial statements according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the coordination and control of BUMG and its consolidating entities accounting functions, including matters related to the monthly close process, GL account reconciliations and accurate, timely financial reporting.

  • Primary responsibility for producing monthly financial statements for BUMG and its consolidating entities and presenting the results to the BUMG Finance Committee.

  • Coordinates with BUMG consolidating entities to ensure their monthly financials are done accurately and consistently and in a time to produce monthly and year-end consolidated financials for the various boards and committees.

  • Continuously improve the month-end financial closing processes to ensure accurate and timely preparation and issuance of the monthly financial statements, as well as to reduce the number of days and manual tasks required to close.

  • Utilize a risk-based approach to ensure the prioritization of high-risk accounts such as cash and Accounts Receivable.  Ensure Accounting Supervisor is monitoring and reviewing reconciliations prepared by staff and ensures timely resolution of outstanding items and variances. 

  • Coordinate and facilitate the completion of the year-end audit.  Act as a liaison to related departments in order to facilitate the flow of information and oversee the production of the year-end analysis and reconciliation.

  • Direct the year-end process and implement controls to ensure smooth processes to achieve the efficient and timely completion of the year-end audit.

  • Coordinate the preparation of annual tax returns with outside CPA firm.  Comply with local, state and federal government reporting and tax filings for BUMG and its consolidating entities; Form 990, MA-PC, UBIT, ABC Filings and Abandoned Property filings.

  • Oversees in conjunction with the Accounting Supervisor the inter-company billing and settlement process between BUMG and its consolidating entities, BUAP and BMC.

  • Responsible for staffing the BUMG Investment Committee, monitors BUMG investment balances and manages relationship with investment firm. Manages account access and security for all users amongst BUMG and its consolidating entities.

  • Provide annual budgets and forecasts to the Budget & Financial Planning department.  This includes General Accounting budget, various Corporate Service line budgets.

  • Manage banking relationship with Bank of America (BOA).  Monitor bank fees; maintain authorized signatures on all accounts; process wires; ensure appropriate individuals have access to BOA on-line tool.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of the interfaces of all subsystems (i.e. revenue cycle system Epic and BU payroll system)

  • Work closely with FIS on any changes or upgrades to the General Ledger and related sub-systems.

  • Ensure proper accounting treatment in compliance with current Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Keep current on all new Accounting Pronouncement. Responsible for researching accounting guidelines and interpreting rules for accounting questions as that arises.  Enhance professional knowledge by attending trainings and seminars related to healthcare and accounting.

  • Maintain general accounting staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.

  • Inform Senior Director of Finance regarding areas of exposure within the General Accounting department, as well as other areas within Finance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

BA/BS in Accounting or related-degree required.   A CPA, or MBA or Master’s degree in finance or accounting is preferred. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

As stated above.

EXPERIENCE:

5 - 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including 4-6 years supervisory experience. Healthcare experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Other skills and qualification required are as follows:

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, with a focus on Excel, and Infor General Ledger System

  • Leadership ability to guide, direct and mentor staff and work effectively as a team member.

  • Skills in anticipating and accurately predicting the results of alternate courses of action.

  • Skills in determining needs, gathering, analyzing and presenting data to provide accurate and timely information for management’s use.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be a dedicated team player, with a strong focus on mentoring and coaching and a desire for personal and professional growth.

  • Work requires ability to function in a fast-paced environment.

  • Work requires ability to handle multiple priorities with superior organizational skills.

  • Requires strong analytical skills and a solid working knowledge of US GAAP. Communication skills will also be critical in conjunction with the analytical skills, as ad-hoc analysis must be developed and refined based on specific management needs.

  • Must have superior communication skills and the ability to coach and develop a diverse team.

  • Proven time-management abilities, multitasking with effective priority definition, and demonstrated flexibility with a focus on meeting deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to own processes, to identify issues and opportunities for improvement, and implement such improvements.
